I was going to buy a 6 string bass but think I'll just tune my 5HS EADGC. I have a G&L L-2500 with flats tuned BEADG that I'll keep that way.

What strings would you recommend and where can I get them? Will I need a new nut? If so, where can I get one?

Thanks for the assistance!

Checked the specs on the Bongo 6. I can just order a set of those strings.

Now, about that nut...

Generally, you can buy a single high C string (usually .30 or .32) to match your favorite 4 string set. I used to do this all the time.

i would see if i could buy a bongo 6 string nut and then have the best luthier in town modify it to fit the 5 string. if i remember correctly the edges are laquered over so you would need someone who knows what they are doing if you want to keep the appearances up to date :)

that way you might even enjoy the effects of the new intonation system (unless there is some magic done at the other end of the bass as well..)

but thats just me, and also this is internet advice.. feel free to do whatever you want with it :)

You shouldn't need to do anything to the nut. I've had other brand basses that I strung E - C without modding the nut.
