hi guys,

I wanted to play last night For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica.
started the track and play along, but I am "out of tune" comparing to their guitars on the original recording.

tune a half step up first 3 strings (E, A, D) and I'm right there with their tuning.

after a few minutes I got back to normal tunning, because as far as I know you have to make some adjustments on springs, truss rod...

is that right?

thx.

Hello Paul

Don't worry : a half step is not a lot ... you don't need to change your setup if you need this tuning just for one song.
But I am a bit surprised : I did not remember that Metalica was playing with a non standard tuning on For Whom the Bell Tolls.
If you want to play Thin Lizzy, you have to down-tune with a 3/4 step ...

As long as you intonation is correct the adjustment is really minimal

And if it's just for a song I guess you can leave it this way :)

François you beat me on the answer :p

tnx guys, I thought that is necessary to do those adjustments, are you sure is not? :p

and yes it was strange for me too that metallica would tune up not down
here is what I found about this song
"The original studio version with a length of 5:10. The guitars sound slightly sharper than a standard-tuned guitar should sound. It is rumoured, however, that this is because the song was sped up after recording. If the song was sped up too much or was sped up using low quality means, it would raise the pitch of the recording, thus apparently sharpening the guitar's tuning. However, another rumour says that the guitars were intentionally tuned up to match the pitch of the bells tolling. "
