So the old sparkle Sterling re-hab job was doing pretty well except for soldering up a new output jack. Today, with an hour to kill and feeling (wrongly) that my soldering skills were up to spec, I started in on the job.

Hey. The old jack and the new jack don't look the same. Hmmm. Well, this is a 2002 bass, maybe they changed jacks.

Wait, what the....why are the two red wires TAPED AND SOLDERED TOGETHER?

Okay, let's call Jon. He telephonically diagnoses the main questions.

1. The output jack has been replaced with a non-MM jack.
2. Whoever did it was smoking crack.

Thank God for Jon! Well, and phones, too.

So he walked me through what goes where and then set me loose to go insane on my own. Two hours later, I do believe it is done.

(You really need six hands to solder properly.)

I think I can finally take this little abused beauty out in public now.

Thanks, Jon!

G*$*$it, f*#$I(ng solderin iron!

Spoke too soon. I still have to jiggle the plug to get it to work properly.

I'm taking it to someone who can solder, dammit!

Azzy, right now, it would take about four dollars but then I'm also determined to get this thing working RIGHT.

Grrrrrr!

I'm not one to laugh at other's misfortune. But if it's minor like this I sometimes laugh.

Stick to Bongos, they solder better. Your owning of that Sterling is only a state of flux anyway, send it to Azzy, £5 quid is $9.00 after all...

Thanks for the pointer, Larry, but he will have to wait a week - I am out of town on vacation at the moment.

I'll give you $10 as is Jack. Your soldering must be worse than my Spanish. I should have had you bring it down to NAMM with you.

There should be a law against abusing a Musicman like this poor Sterling's former owner did.

You're right about that, Grace. Well, now that I've settled down, I'm calmer and ready to take it to Ray's repair guy (since Tim's out of town somewhere).

We're playing Club Dada again on the 5th of August and I'd really like to play it.

You vultures!

After looking at all the nastyass shop benches in this town I wouldn't let any of them touch any of my MM's. I took my own towels up to Wayne's shop for the "Jewel" job. I knew what I was going in to at Waynes, the place is a sawmill dust inches thick on everything. He's only built 300+ guitars, at the open house BP's shop looks like a clean room at Intel.

Good luck Jack, I know you'll get her fixed

Jack...Your soldering skills may be OK. Make sure the lugs on the jack are not touching the bass pot when it all goes back together. The lugs could be shorting out on the jack casing. Pull the jack about half way out and see if it works. If it does put the jack back in but turn it 180 degrees.
