well, at first, it sounded (sonically) to me as though Eno and Lanois had saved all of the presets and settings from the All That You Can't Leave Behind sessions to which got me worrying 'cuz I reeeeally don't dig that U2 album.

thankfully new-ish melodies and chord changes start to emerge and all in all I'd say that they either listened to a bit of early 90's era Bowie and/or consciously decided to deviate a bit further from permutations of I-VI-V-IV
imh-(but biased U2 fan)-o this is well worth the money with it's nods to Zooropa here and there as well as a brief glimpse of Achtung
