I have been a big fan of heavy ash basses for a long time. I know that EB used to use ash on a lot of solid color basses in the past but bad started moving to other woods in recent years. I always assume that a painted bass hass a very low chace of being a heavy ash bass but I do find one now and again. The Black/Rosewood SR that I got from Tom is a pretty heavy bass and feels and sounds solid as all get out. I don't want to take the neck off to check it but I would love to know if EB does in fact still use the ugly ash for painted basses from time to time. I also know that ash is not the only "heavy" wood that EB uses....right?
