Ok Is this another GC bashing thread? I deal with Indpendents and Mom and Pops and GC. I have to be political but it stands to reason that if someone is servicing their market really well then GC would look for other markets that werent served well before "invading' a well served market.

Here is the deal not all mom and pops are great as not all GC's are great wither. Mom and pops get into trouble when they A. so nothing or B try to be Guitar Center

i had my Ibanez JS1000 stolen by a guitar shop about 8 years ago, i walked in at about 1pm one day, asked for a service on the axe, they said come back in an hour and it will be done, so i went back, i asked if it was ready, they said they dont do services and could i please leave. ?!?!??! I had an invoice all signed and everything. luckily my father in law is a lawyer, i contributed to getting the place shut down too!!! Didnt get my axe back, but after hundreds of guitarists who had similar dealings got togther and kicked up a fuss the place got in real trouble.

WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man l can't believe this happened to you, l would of flipped out, bones would of been broken.

Even though you didn't get your guitar back, did you at least get your money back?

Scott.

personally i love my local mom and pops and my local GCs for different reasons. to me they're not the exact same thing... they're close but different. one if better IMO for xyz and the other is better at abc. so when i have something to buy i go to whichever i think suits the situation the best.

Mom and Pop shops will never go away provided they maintain the essence of what they are- Customer service with a deeper personal touch. They can maintain the higher margin to battle GC's buying power by selling on a value-add, which is done by knowing on an intimate level what the customer needs.

The more you know your customer the more you'll satisfy them. To the small shop owner the customer means more so they should meet all of their needs.
This philosophy is the opposite of the retail mindset. If they lose this connection then they become a more expensive Guitar Center and like Big Poppa said, they'll be gone.

this is true... i just got a bit freaked when you see an Advertisement for GC coming soon and then a "We're Going Fishing" advertisement for a small mom and pop shop... and now that i think about it... there service isn't that great...

BP... Skip's is a great shop that provides awesome service and everyone in there knows me... I think they will be around for a long long time... now that i think about it... are you ever up in this area visiting?

OK, if there's one thing I've learned from our customers here is that they DON'T LIKE IT WHEN YOU LEAVE. They want you to be always there for them, and I'm sure you'd never see a "Gone Fishin'" sign in a GC.

Look at it from Belinda's Dad's point of view.....

"OH Daddy!, I've finally met the man of my dreams!" "Great Pumpkin!, Is he a Lawyer?" "Oh no Daddycakes, it's sooooomuch better than that!" "A Doctor, Lambchop?"

" NO DADDY He is a GUITAR PLAYER! and he collects these funny guitars from California!"

and what great guitars they are!!!!!!! i woke up thinking of an Albert Lee in lava pearl.....

you know, its kinda funny. all her family are doctors, lawyers, executives, PLUS they are all rich/snobby people too, they dont even listen to music! at family outings i'm soooo the odd one out!!!!!!!! They have a hard time accepting some bum from the gutter musician into their family.
They keep asking me if i'm still "doing the music thing", because it cant possibly pay good. different worlds........
