i was wondering, instead of shelling out extra cash for a new stingray if i could put a new classics neck on my old one, and more importantly i was wondering if i could add string mutes to my 2004 stingray. im really into this string mute thing and was wondering is it possible to add these to my stingray as well as an old 76 style bass without disfiguring or screwing it up? can a customer service person do this for me?

1. why would you want a classic neck on your ray?
2. you can't buy the necks separately
3. i can't see any reason why anyone that owns a classic would ever sell the neck.
4. no, you can't add mutes.
5. well, actually you can buy aftermarket mutes but they're not musicman specific ones and look nothing like ebmm mutes do, but they're still mutes. EDIT: link

The saddle grooves on a muted bridge and on an unmuted bridge are cut in different places. You may have trouble with string alignment over the pickups.
The muted bridge has holes in the body (under the bridge) to take the shafts of the thumb screws. The holes will be exposed if you add an unmuted bridge. Holes would have to be drilled on the other body to take the the screws.

If you don't want the mutes on anymore, unscrew the bridge and remove the mute plate, then reinstall your bridge.

im happy with my bass though, i just want cool mutes! im probobly gonna just buy the aftermarket one size fits all mutes thing from that website posted earlier, i really like the neck though. finished neck would be a little cooler but not enough to buy a new bass cooler

I've bought new basses for less important reasons.
The reason I want to change the bridge is I have another Stingray that I made a custom pick guard for it. Here is a picture. It is basically the design of a 5 string Stingray pick guard on a four string. I just picked up another stingray but this one has the mutes. I had another pick guard made for it and when I went to put it on it didn't fit because the bridge is larger due to the mutes. So I thought I would just put a different bridge on it. But now it sounds like that won't work so I will just have to notch the pick guard to fit around the bridge. It's not a big deal but I was hoping for a different solution. Opinions vary, but I have never been a fan of the control plates on the four strings and prefer the look of the 5 strings but I am a 4 string player. Creating my own best of both worlds.
My other one is a natural body with a maple neck and I got a tortoise guard for it. Thought it might make for a nice matched pair.

I am just the opposite. I like the look of the round pickguard and not the look of the large cover most of the body 5 string pickguard. In fact, I really like the look of the new clear one I made. To each his own!
