I'm sure some of you have modified an OLP so I'm looking for some feedback on successful mods you may have made. I just picked up a MM1, any suggestions?

I still have my old OLP MM1 as a backup (main guitar is nowadays a JP6), and I've done these mods:

- added tone knob (and replaced the volume knob with better one)
- changed pickups (now DiMarzio AirZone (bridge) and AirNorton (neck))
- replaced the pickup switch and modified the wiring so that it has coil split in center position (similar to JP6)

I've also changed the nut 'cause the old one broke, but that's not really a mod... ;)

Years & years ago I bought an MM1. I returned it 2 days later. I was not impressed at all. Then I discovered the monthly payment plan and bought my first MM ASS.

If you're going to mod an OLP you have to replace just about everything and your still left with that ugly photo laminate top. That can be very costly.

It's your cash, do what you like.

Well, my OLP was my main guitar 6 years (I bought it in 2003 after 14 years of playing) even though I had other (more expensive) guitars available. Before I bought my OLP I compared 4 different MM1's, and the differences were huge. When the price level is that low, you really have to test different individuals. With EBMM (JP6) I was quite sure that each invidual is great, so it was easy to order without testing (and wait it to be built).

I still like my OLP and consider it as a great guitar, and I'm not gonna sell it 'cause no one will pay enough for it.

What is your budget? That should be your first priority. As some people have already mentioned, it can be a money pit.......especially if you do not do your own work!

A cheap, but effective move would be to change the Bridge pickup. I suggest a Seymour Duncan JB (Jeff Beck). A used one on eBay is about $35. These pickups were standard on the Kramer Baretta guitars back in the day.

Before you do anything at all, check the neck really, really carefully. If the frets are all consistant and level, you're way ahead of the game. Measure for any twisting. If all good, go ahead and make whatever changes you wish. Personally, I'd put in a 500k push pull pot to coil split both pickups, lock down the trem and call it a day. This is an easy, reversable, cheap $15 upgrade. Street value for most OLPs is $100. I sold mine for $125 but included a gig bag that didn't come with it and extra strings and a headphone adapter. I also gave a few guitar lessons.
