I'm shipping a bass to a fellow forumite. I go to the local UPS store armed with bass, OHSC, and the EBMM box that my Bongo came in. The girl says shipping will be $15.85, plus $10.00 if I want a piece of bubble wrap around the head stock. No thanks. Does that include insurance? "Oh, you want damage insurance? We have to package it if you want it insured." So now it goes from $15.85 to $61.00. They put two boxes together, insert 5000,000 styrofoam p-nuts, and can't keep my address staight. I ask how long this is going to take, because they're having a hard time putting to boxes together. Oh, about 30 minutes. Well, I can tell this is delicate work, so I leave, because they promise to call when they're done. (I have to go back because they can't take a credit card over the phone, and won't hold cash before they're finished.
Why am I telling ya'll this? Because my wife walked away laughing when I tried to tell her, my kids said, DUDE, and I'M PISSED!

Ok, I think I'm OK now

Back to talk about green basses

Time to find a new shipping outlet or take it to FedEx or UPS directly.

UPS's only requirement for insurance of electronic items is that it has to be double boxed. As far as I know, the HSC counts as one of those boxes. The other box can usually be hand selected from your fav LMS's stock of shipping cartons that they get their HSC's in. Hope you find a better shipping outlet.

I insure stuff that I pack myself every day and have only had to file a claim with UPS once in 8 years and over well over 2,000 shipped on Big Brown and that was on a POS Hofner that's built like a toy.

The UPS Store admitted to being a third party, I bet Dude is dealing directly with UPS and their insurance is different that the UPS Store. The only trip I'll ever take to a UPS Store will be to get my friggin check for that damaged case!

I run my UPS shipments through Office Depot. Since they don't have a packaging service, there's never any of that "UPS won't insure it unless we pack it" BS. I alway pack my own and insure it with no problem at all. Of course, I will add that I've never had to make a damage claim.

The shipping department where I work always ships stuff for me, and I guess because of whatever business agreement we have with UPS everything that my company ships is automatically insured. But with my SR 5 on the way, those pics of that case and that guitar scare me to death!!

Most of them are and that's why they can have BS rules like we don't insure unless we pack it..........................but there are a few UPS company owned. Don't exactly know how you can tell the difference.

Saying they won't insure it unless they package it is pure BS. They simply ripped you off. You can even use UPS shipping through Paypal where you just print a shipping label from the Paypal payment you were sent and you just fill in the amount you want insured and print the label.

And obviously suggest you do it. I've shipped lots of basses and amps through UPS and the only thing they've destroyed was an SWR amp so I've had good luck, but things happen.

Dang Tony, I hate to hear that but know the feeling. I even have you beat.

Couple weeks ago, I shipped a Berg 2x10 cab and my old HD-500 amp. I had the UPS Store pack them. Packing, shipping (GROUND), and insurance was $160.00.

Looking over the itemized reciept, they charged me $40+ just for packing materials.

Ive never seen a $15 box until that day.

I hear ya Travis. I try my best to keep the original shipping cartons because I got sick of being ripped off.
