Ok, I'm about to go pick up my petrucci for the last time... could someone here make a video of them dive bombing a few times, and staying in tune? I really need to argue this with the shop. Last time I got the guitar back, it was in such a state that they didn't let me have it.... and apparantly a Strings and Things rep said the same after inspecting it... obviously I'm quite annoyed about this business, but with fingers crossed, I'm hoping it'll be perfect this time... So basically, I need a video of someone divebombing on the petrucci a f ew times then showing using harmonics that its still in tune... could someone also tell me how many divebombs can be expected before it starts going out.... also could someone just go crazy on the wammy, dive bombs, whatever.... and check the tuning on vid.... sorry for the hassle, its just that I'm obviously anxious for it to be perfect this time round!

Well if I did it I wouldn't be worried about the guitar staying in tune, I'd be more concerned about people's reaction to seeing me on video, wanking my whammy :D

I think it's unrealistic to think ANY guitar will stay in tune after doing that much "whammy" to it. That's one of the reasons guys who do a lot of that stuff switch guitars on every song playing live. Just my opinion

yeah I know... but I just need to know what is to be expected, hence why I need someone with a petrucci to tell me what I can expect and record it on vid!

Lot's of variables there. How new/old are the strings? Have they been previously stretched out? What gauge? What brand? How extreme is the whammy use? What's the enviroinment like (hot/cold/humid/dry)? Is the nut overly grooved? Does the nut have nut sauce applied? All of these things contribute to the overall ability of the guitar to "get back" in tune after whammying.

but what would the general average wammy use on a petrucci be like? Lets say at its very worst condition...

Whereabouts are you in the UK?

I can recommend a couple of decent techs who WILL be able to make the guitar play to the best of its ability.

Big Bends Nut Sauce is gaining a lot of respect in alleviating problems with sticky nuts (guffaw!!)....though I have to admit not to having a problem with my own Petrucci. I'm not a total Floyd-style player but certainly give it some abuse.

I would guess the nut has to be the most likely candidate for causing a problem - as long as the locking tuners are strung up correctly (you havent got lots of string wrapped around the post have you?).

nope, in fact, it will have come straight back from strings and things! When you say you give it abuse... could you record what sort of abuse you mean, I mean, we can't really describe use of a whammy bar can we :p

I can! For you, I just got back from downstairs where I beat the living bejesus out of my Petrucci's whammy bar - lots of it and quite severe both ways. From the strings forward to all the way back. Fast and furious. Like Steve Vai on crack, I was.

Did it stay in tune? Not perfectly, but damn close! Yes, I had to use a tuner to tell. I'm actually quite impressed with it now more so than ever! Wow. I found it helped that whenever I finished abusing the trem, I always pushed it just a little up (so the pitch went up), and that seemed to really help bring it back in tune! Just my observations.

Oh, and it was a nice day - fairly humid - no nut sauce - strings are at least 6 weeks old (EB Super Slinkys 9-42).

ahh that sounds perfect! Now.. if when my guitar gets back from the shop.. and it still can't do that... I can complain.. thing is, I need a vid/recording please! The guitar shop I'm dealing with are a bit anal... ahem, and would ask me to prove everything I say!

That guitar shop sounds like a problem. You might want to learn to setup your own guitar. Saves you money and you know it is done right if you do it yourself.

I normally can set up my guitar.. but the petrucci seems to be different! Plus it didn't hold in tune when I got it... some forum members might remember some of the older threads in which I was complaining about it :(

As far as a video goes, I'll see what I can do. I need to get another person to help me. I have a digital cam corder. Now, where could I post/host such a beast?
