I found a used axis at a local shop that's on consignment. Translucent gold with a beautiful quilted top and very nice figuring on the neck. It has the recessed neck plate which i very much like. Very minimal fret wear but I think it could use a fret level and the ends of the fret are sticking out a little where it feels sharp when you run your hand along the neck.

The bridge isn't original though. It is a gotoh brand Floyd and I brought that issue up when negotiating a price. I noticed the bridge plate isn't sitting flush to the body. The bridge is level but the plate is about an 1/8" above the body. Under the gotoh bridge plate there seems to be some other thin plate touching the body preventing the bridge from sitting flush to the body. I cant figure out what it is. And it doesnt look like the spring retainer plate for the locking screws. Are the gotoh brand and the ebmm oem bridge identical besides the stamp on the plate? Any pics of under the bridge would be most appreciated. I'll see what I can do about getting some pictures of the guitar.

The action is a little high in the upper register. I'm attributing that to the bridge setup and minor truss rod adjustment. Maybe a neck shim would be in order. The neck is not twisted and appears to be straight. I'd even consider sending it back to the factory for a setup.

Anyway....the asking price was 1500 and I talked them down to 1200. The salesman even said it's been sitting there for a while...so maybe even be able to talk them lower.

Any thoughts on this? I'd really love to rescue this guitar and set it up properly.

I would think you could find one around the same price that is all original at the guitar center website. Maybe In better conditition then that one too. I would want It for under 1000 if it's not original and with the fret sprout.

$1200 is a very average price for a used Axis in great condition. You can find once much cheaper in the condition you're describing.

Take Gio's advice...check the used section of the g.c. website. Save a few hundred.

That one sounds like a mess.

Look at mine in the f/s section to at least get a reading on what a 100% mint one should cost.

Hey, u talkin to me? NY
I would avoid buying that guitar, even if they went down to $1K. I agree with the guys. Here's a fine example and I bet you that you can talk them down to $1,200 shipped (if you're in the US). Plus, you get the GC 30 day money back guarantee!

I just updated my profile with my location....yeah I'm in the USA. I figured that 1200 was about the average price for a great condition original. And Jack....I saw your ad in the "for sale" thread and actually used that as kind of a baseline for the price range when I was talking price with the salesman. I didn't exactly negotiate the 1200....they told me that was the lowest the person was willing to sell it.

I haven't completely abandoned the idea of getting the guitar. I'm thinking maybe offering 850 or 900 and see what happens. I can do all the clean up and set up work myself. Like I said....the fret wear is minimal. There's a few wear spots on the G and B strings on the lower frets but the fret crown on the rest of the neck looks mint. My main concern with the fret work is the fret sprouting as gforce put it.

Defender I would take the advice the guys have given and be a little patient. You will find a better deal possibly even in the For Sale thread or on the GC used section. For that price you would at least want it all original.

I would avoid this guitar. If the Floyd isn't original, that throws up all kinds of red flags for me. There are alot of people out there that produce pretty convincing Axis bodies. This could be a parts guitar that someone put together in their bedroom with a parts from ebay for less than $500.00. If you are really considering buying it, check the serial number and do some serious research on the guitar.
