I may soon find myself with a few bucks to spend on a bass -- just about enough to buy a used Stingray -- and need to make a decision.
Should I hunt for a used Stingray or buy a Stingray SUB and do something useful (like pay a couple of bills) with the difference.
Let me preface this by saying that I don't have a problem with the finish of a SUB. (To my eyes, if you put a black or black ice pickguard on a black, red, or white SUB, that's pretty hot.) I am more concerned about the tonal authenticity and flexibility of the SUB vs. the Ray.
I know that the active SUB has a 2-band EQ vs. the 3-band on the Stingray. I also know that the SUB is not contoured where the Ray has a nice belly-cut. I have been told that the quality difference is negligible although the Stingray will look and feel more luxurious.
Bottom line, I think it may be time to add "The Stingray Sound" to my collection. I'd like to do it cost effectively but on the other hand, I don't want to be penny-wise and dollar-foolish.
