hay there tone hounds. I am looking for a bit more edge...oomph ....harmonic richness...gain from my Marshall vintage modern. Thinking about a jj 308-s valve swap to make my balls sound even sweeter. Any thoughts would be apreciated.

Cheers

I love my JJ power tubes (valves), but when it comes to preamp, I'm all about good old Chinese 12AX7 (ECC83).

You can get the Chinese tubes just about anywhere. Groove Tubes and Ruby rebrand them.

+1 for thetubestore.com

Jonny and I were chattin about this before he posted it although he has not said all he wants.
Think he said 15% more gain and more bottom end.
I was think he could get it modded to take 6550 tubes but I don't know if that would change the sound too much. Although I also said he could try a Bass EQ pedal in the effects loop to increase the bottom end.

Was also thinking... ive never tried it though, what if the overall signal gain was increased on the EQ pedal to push the output tubes more? would that work?

I can vouch for WV. I have spoken to Derek the owner a couple of times over the years and there is nothing he doesn't know when it comes to valves. A really helpful and friendly bloke with similar customer care values to our very own EBMM....well worth a call

cheers chaps for the info. I started running my DOD malmsteen pedal through the head and am getting close to my sound. S mate of mine (and azazal) has some spare valves and we are going to swap some in. Sounds like fun. Will let you know how it goes.

The 803 is much fatter sounding than the 83. I tried them in V1 spots for awhile, then dropped them for lack of definition and too much fatness. They also are prone to be more microphonic due to the long plate, and for that reason are not recommended in combos (which I understand your isn't). Bottom line for me - no thanks.

For higher gain, you might try the Tung-Sol reissues in V1, or across the board, for that matter.

but I kind of like the EH 12AX7's.

Nothing fancy shmancy but a clear, true and reliable choice. I use them with balanced triodes in phase inverter positions. Also in V3 of my GH50L. Can't go wrong with them in any spot.
