I bought a Sterling by Music Man SB today at Bass Central. I'm not a bass player, but I needed something to use when making home recordings/demos, and this instrument seemed like a tremendous bang for the buck.

My original intention was to check out some EBMM guitars while I was there, and particularly the Luke's. After playing a JP, a Morse, a Reflex, and a Luke, to my surprise, what I fell in love with was the Albert Lee model; it just felt like an old friend as soon as I picked it up.

I'm not a fan of thin necks, but to my surprise, given that Albert is not a big guy, the neck had a nice, comfortable profile. They had three in stock, one of which I just wasn't interested in for purely cosmetic reasons. Out of the two that I played (for several hours), one had a neck that was significantly thicker. The difference was even visible to the naked eye, if you looked at both necks next to each other, from a side view. The bigger neck was definitely my favorite, but I didn't buy it because it was a hardtail, and I wasn't sure I wanted to compromise on having a trem. Told them I'd have to sleep on it.

Have any of you discovered noticable differences in neck size between two of the same model? It's interesting how, regardless of brand, two guitars that come off the line one after the other can be so different. I'd be hesitant to order something over the web, just for that reason.

I've got 3 ALs - two maple necks and one rosewood. They feel intrinsically the same as far as profile is concerned yet there are subtle differences which I put down to the final handsanding. I'm building a "bitsa" guitar at the moment and have been playing around with the sanding of the neck and I didn't have to remove too much to notice a difference in the feel.
Regarding hardtail/trem ... ....fwiw and imo I'd go for a trem model.
