Hey guys, I already posted some pics in the Official Gig Pics thread, but we finally got a video up of one of the songs we did. it actually isnt the best song we played, but its better than nothing. This was my first gig, i did an open mic about a month before, but it was in front of like 15 people and most were respectful musicians so i dont really count it as a gig. anyway, all the other guys have played in bands for years, this is the first band ive ever been in, and i actually did my first and only audition ever with them in feb. This is also the first time i tried to learn music without tab. thankfully most of our stuff is pretty simple original rock stuff, but still fun to play. we did a good enough job that the club owner said we can play there whenever we want. it was about as good of a first show as anyone could ask for, and i was pretty proud of my performance considering ive been playing bass less than 2 years. Sound quality isnt fantastic, but im guessing thats normal for taping live shows. Sorry its in Quicktime, we'll hopefully get it up on YouTube soon. My Sterling looks awesome as always.

The Video Link, sorry i couldn't embed it...

Hey, that's good quality video. Was it filmed from a balcony or mezzanine floor? Looks great, especialy for your first gig. My first gig when I was 16 or 17 was in the corner of a bar with topless barmaids on a Saturday afternoon. The 4 barmaids outnumbered the audience.

Thanks Mark, and Wow that sounds like an epic first gig win to me! We didn't even have 1 topless barmaid at our show :( . And yep it was filmed from the mezzanine. I really dig how the mirror in the back lets you see the rest of the crowd too, the camera guy picked a really cool angle to shoot from. But the guy that setup the lights, put them right in my eyes so i couldnt really face the crowd at a straight angle...

I remember the first time I played a real gig...was a high school talent show to a packed auditorium of around 400 and my legs and arms were shaking so bad that I didn't even know how I was supposed to perform...I just went up and did a bass solo and it all worked out though. I became a pretty popular person after that:p

My only advice to you is to keep playing out a lot and get on the edge of that stage and play to the pretty girls:D

Cool song, love the room with the mirrors!

That's not so bad considering that they were topless

Nice job. Well done for a first gig. I really dig that room and the mirrors.

The advice to face the audience rather than your bandmates is something you should consider.

My first gig was in a pretty big townhall with approx. 30 stray people in there.
My personal highlight of the show was when the strap came off and I dropped my bass. *shudder*
Lucky it wasn't a MM though...

Thanks guys, and yea totally agree about facing the audience. and i would have loved to do so in this show. However, the lighting guy set up the lights where they were shining right in my eyes, so facing the crowd wasnt really an option. if you look in the mirror you can see what i mean, its aimed directly at my eyes. So i had to stand at that weird angle or be blinded. We did sound check when there was still daylight in the room. there was no way to tell i was going to be "blinded by the light", so cant really be too harsh on the lighting guy.

stage lights can be a killer...lession learned, sunglasses can look cool at a rock show if you're the entertainment and for the safety of your retina:p

keep up the good work

Well, since your eyes are right in the middle of your face, that's where the light's supposed to go:) Get used to not seeing much of the audience, just face the right direction and play;-)

Very good video btw!

thanks, and ill keep that in mind, is it fairly common to have lights blinding you on stage? sounds like you've had to deal with it a time or two yourself?

It is fairly usual for the lights to be in your face. Just don't stare upwards!!

:D

(Disclaimer, people don't put lights on when I play, but I have been known to pretend to be an actor from time to time)

lol, these were actually coming from right at head level with the audience, so anytime tried to look at the audience in front of me id see green and red spots for the next 10 mins. that said, once it got dark i had like a 12ft shadow the whole show which was kinda cool...
