hey guys
i was wondering if it was safe to put my stingray volume all the way up to max. is it going to harm the preamp in the bass? is it going to damage anything? would you recommend it?

As a rule I always run my volume at full on any bass. The tone is always better (to my ears). And as far as I know, it's meant to be wide-open, it can't/won't hurt the pre-amp.

No problem as long as you don't clip your amp/head's preamp. If you're concerned, use the "active" input or engage the attenuation pad if your head has one.

Sorry, I know you ask in good faith & the replies are helpful, but I think that is a really dumb question.

Why on earth would EB allow you to turn the volume up so high it would damage the bass?

Common sense should prevail.

Yeah, true enough I guess, better to ask.

Just seems a leetle obvious, no?

The only concern I ever usually have regarding volume/input is making sure any cab I use is rated high enough to cope with the max the amp could put out.

Not really a dumb question. Though guitar players can use the volume knobs to control how their amps will react, most basses sound their best with their volumes knobs up all the way.

They were made to open up; Open it up, adjust with amp if it gets to loud.
If I buy a car that has 120 on the speedo I expect it to run wide open 120.
Same as with my basses.

I'm one of those who've never quite figured out what a volume control is for. Mine stays on full all the time. :)

And now for something completely different. The reason I don't leave the volume at full, is so that I don't have to fiddle with my amp if I do need a wee more volume. I like my tweaking to be onboard. I don't find the tonal differences to be that great one way or the other. Now with a passive bass, everything at 11.

The only stupid question is the one that is unasked.
For instance, here's my possibly silly question: I see a lot of P.A. power amplifier setups where the level control is set below 50%. I don't understand that. It's all controlled from the sound board so as long as you have a capable soundman, why not get all the available juice from the amp??? Aren't you missing a lot of headroom by not having the amp all the way up?

Many engineers will only run wide open on their amps. As a general rule, that's fine, but you don't want to screw up your gain structure by having your main mix fader attenuating by 40dB either. Stay out of the red, and stay out of the mud. Depends on the band, room and system.
