waiting for my JP6 and coil taping her.......

Well, two weeks ago I did something that for me was unreachable.......never going to happend... but after saving every freaking penny, and doing lots of research i ended up going for the jp6 with piezos, the other 2 guitars I had in mind were a parker nitefly mojo and a ESP M2.... . I didnt wanted to go for the ESP cuz it seemed to be like a " metal metal metal" guitar, i mean, I like that guitar but I like all kinds of music i loved the 24 frets on that one but it doesnt have piezos like the parker or the JP so......... .The parker.... well it didnt hadf 24 frets so that was a turn off..... I used to own a parker a pm10 that I sold to pay for the deposit on my JP but the niteflight is a diferent league, but I didnt had the curvy body of the JP, its kinda angular and the front of the guitar is flat, I rally like that arm recess in the JP and I'm a Dream Theater fan so what the hell..... .I almost fliped when the guy told me that I had to wait 3 months to put my hands on it but no pain no gain.......... Its gonna be Mystic Dream, non matching headstock, dot markers and the piezo bridge, but after hanging around here for acouple of days made me want a 7 string!!!! and a LUKE!!!!!!!!! jeezzz seems like I gonna have to ask for a raise at my job :D ....... By the way I have read a couple of prices from JP with the same specs as mine but I dont know why I feel that for what Im paying I could have the matching headstock....I dunno if I can post the price so im not doing it ( lapsus brutus ) but If anyone can give me an idea of how much a jp with my spects cost will apreciate it.

One last thing, what do you guys think about coiltaping in the JP....push/pull knobs or an extra switch....... whatever the metod used, I think that it will be kinda xpensive dont u think?....but I want to keep that idea floating around, let me know what u think guys.

Thx

Welcome to the addiction!

Long Island eh? Got some good peeps in that neck of the woods.....I will be seeing them next month when I visit the in-laws. OC and ernie....it's getting close!

JP's are fantastic guitars, I own three. One is Mystic Dream too! So, if you happen to be around LI next month, give me a PM, maybe we can get together and jam.

And just to be mean, I will bring my Mystic Dream JP for you to play as a little bit of tease if you like.....hehehehehehe......

Again, welcome and stick around.....it's a fun ride!

Couldn't answer that I'm afraid. I have never been interested in that myself. Not that there is anything wrong with it. Some other peeps here will chime in and give you their opinion.

As for the guitar issue you have....no problem, I have three JP's and I can bring two with me.....hehehehe.....seriously, I wouldn't have a problem bringing one out there for you to play. Let me know.

I have both the JP6 and the ESP M II Urban Camo. I've got to admit, I really like the ESP a lot, but for versatility, you did the right thing by going with the JP6. I got mine fully loaded a few years ago for about 1200 bucks, but that was a few years ago, and I've definitely noticed the prices have gone up. But also it's pearl redburst, not mystic dream.

The ESP is like you said, a great metal and shredding guitar. With the piezo, I don't think you'll need to do any coil tapping in the JP6. For great acoustic sounds, I just set the piezo switch in the middle to get both the humbuckers and the piezo active, then I set the humbucking selector in the middle and turn the volume down slightly until I have that out-of-phase sound that I like.

Thanks for the reply man I really apreciate it, well I was actually thinking abou the coil tapping for bluesy songs to get a little bit of the feel of single coils i really enjoyd that of the parker and i want to see if i can put that in the jp6.
By the way thanks for the clean setup tip, i can't wait to hear it

Mr. Hyde,

Welcome to the forum!

If I were you, I'd wait and hear the JP's pickups before deciding that you need a coil tap. The middle pickup position on that guitar is just fantastic for clean sounds! (I have a Pearl Redburst w/all options.)

As for the price, posting dealer 'street' prices for new EBMM guitars is generally frowned upon here. We can talk prices about used guitars or we can talk MSRP of new ones. In your case, the Mystic Dream finish is a $400 (MSRP) upcharge. If you wanted matching headstock, I think that's a $100 (MSRP) upcharge assuming you stick with the dot inlays. I can't recall what the MSRP is for the piezo bridge, I want to say it was in the neighborhood of $300.

Congrats on the purchase!

I have a Mystic, too, but no peizo. I bought too much stuff around the time I got mine, so my wife was really watching the budget there on that one (what are they good for, anyway? :D )

While I do not have mine coil tapped, I have coil tapped many of my guitars with push pulls on the tone knob. Works great, keeps the look of the guitar, and it really does open up the tonal variety. I probably won't be doing it to my JP since I have several other guitars both with singles and with tapped buckers, so I am covered there if I need that sound.

The pups in the JP should lend themselves nicely to single coil taps, though I have never heard them this way. Considering that this will be your only guitar, and perhaps for a while, you might go ahead and have it done after you've played it for a bit just to make sure you are unable to get all the sounds you are looking for.

This is a job for your local luthier if you're not a do-it-yourselfer. It's about a $5-$7 part, and you shouldn't pay much more than $30-$50 in labor (I am assuming NY is going to more expensive than here in Memphis ;) ). It really is a simple job.

Good luck!

A coil-split is a pretty easy mod if you've done any wiring before. If not, you might want to practice on something else first or take it to a tech.

Keep in mind that the middle position uses split coils already- so all you'd be getting is the neck or bridge with one coil on it's own. And even then, the single coils be will noisy since you'll lose the humbucking.

There are three ways to do the humbucker-into-single coil sound: 1. coil split, 2. parallel wiring (instead of the normal series, via a toggle switch) and 3. Bill Lawrence Q-filter. Personally, I like option 3 the most and use it on a few guitars. Gets a great single coil sound, keeps the pickup noise-free, and costs $20. But I have all three mods in various guitars and each has it's advantages/disadvantages.

Personally, for the coil split, I'd put in a push-pull pot for it rather than route a hole for a new switch- makes it easily reversible. You can do it with a single push-pull. Downside of the push-pull is it's not as fast as a toggle.

But yeah- I echo the opinion that you should play it for a while and see if you really need the single coil sounds before re-wiring it.

I have a JP and have it coil tapped. What's funny is I keep finding myself pulling up the switch and selecting the middle position (which is exactly the same PU configuration had I done nothing to the guitar). I find myself only using that position and now wishing I had left it the orginal way.

Why? Well, that middle position is very sweet. However, the other two positions in split mode are very weak and don't add much to the overall tone of the guitar. In fact, I am likely going to take out the coil tap and go back to the original wiring. I think that's really the way to go. So, from someone who's been there and done it, I say leave it alone. Just my two cents. In case you're wondering, I've had it rewired for a couple years now. I wanted to make sure before I put it back to original.

Thanks a lot, to all of you guys!

Well u guys know what u are talking about, and yeah I'm going to play the guitar first and hear this middle position sound, men the more u thalk about it the more I want the guitar NOW! lol, this is insaaaaaane!!. Talking about do-it-yourself I was pretty much that kind of guy... until I completely ruined my first guitar lol, and every time I tried to "mod" it it was a headache, it was a really old guitar that I "borrowed" from my friend's dad hehehe..... the body was explorer shaped but the neck didn't had brand of model at all.... and the neck was bolt on- fenderish..... I actually want to buy a guitar and put those buckers there, but not know I have my hands full with the JP6 hehe at least for quite a while.
