Hey guys, I'm in my fifth year or so of playing bass. I have just recently started a great new band, and with it decided that I am finally ready for an instrument of MusicMan caliber. I saw a video of the Big Al5, and was instantly astonished by its awesome looks and amazing tone. This bass just spoke to me, there is a connection and I must acquire this musical grail..
I ordered my: SSS, maple, Pearl Blue w/matching headstock+ white pearloid pickguard Big Al 5 through perfectbass, Im stoked!...
The only problem is that it has only been a week and a half or so and the wait is already driving me insane. 3 months is going to be torture!
How do you guys make it through the void?

The only thing that is keeping me going is knowing that someday, I will open the case, gaze upon the beaut, and it will be mine!

Sometimes we buy other EBMM instruments from the For Sale thread to hold us over. I'm not making this up.

You're probably (still) too healthy for that.

Welcome! Good choice on the bass!

Sweet!!! Nice color combo.

I can here Carly Simons voice in my head... "Anticipation... Anticipation..." (Yes, I know that dates me  )

Buying other stuff helps me. Maybe you could start looking for a new amp or cab. Also cataloging and labeling cables can also provide hours of distraction and joy... and as a last resort you could try practicing (I'm am saying you need to) but be careful... this can actually make matters worse depending on your current gear ;)

haha, I love the suggestions, but unfortunately I could barely scrape up the dough for the lone Big Al, let alone buying a used bass to tide me over :/ But rest assured, I'm positive that someday in the future when I'm a famous rock star, I will own the entire MM Collection...
Until then though, It's practice, practice, practice.. I've been playing so hard lately that my fingers have been achin, but I just can't stop, I got the groove running through my soul and I gotta get it out. But thats exactly why I am so Stoked for this BigAl5, I don't really have any experience with a 5 stringer, but that extended low-end looks so prime!
People with Big Al 5's, can you give me some picture of what that low B string sounds like? Is it fairly easy to adjust from a 4 banger to a 5? I mean a bass is a bass, and sometimes when I'm really getting into I wish I had more strings, so I imagine the transition should be pretty smooth, especially considering the quality of MusicMan instruments...

Ten years ago after having played 4-strings exclusively for 25 years, I made the switch to 5-string and my bass of choice was a StingRay 5. I haven't played 4-string since.

Looks like you new Big Al is robbing you of sleep... Did you just get up to play it or are you finally going to bed after spending all night with it :p

When I ordered my BA 5 fretless in January right after the NAMM show I was told 3 to 4 months for delivery. I thought man this is going to be hell waiting for this bass. But you will be surprized on how fast time goes by. You are lucky though. Back when I ordered mine there was not a lot of info or video on them. I just had to look at the pics of them from the NAMM show and then ones Big Poppa put up on this forum. Now a lot of stores have the in stock and there is video of them. So you have a lot to look at and drool while you wait. :D To pass time play more. Learn more about bass theory. And that way when you get your new BB5 you can have some new grooves to play on it.

Too help you pass the time. Here is a good practice exercise to get those fingers strengthened up.

Its basically a G Major scale with the third inserted between every note.

G-----------------------------2---4---5-
D-----------------2---4-2-5-4---5---2--- And then back down again
A----2---3-2-5-3---5--------------------
E--3---5--------------------------------

Do it using one finger per fret (yes including the pinky) This really helped me get a bit more dexterity in my left hand.

It doesn't take long to get use to a 5 string. Then you will wonder why you waited so long. Plus it feels almost as good as ...

The best fix is to go to a local GC and just buy one off the shelf til your new one comes, that always helps.
