Just got a new iMac and was fooling around in Garageband last night. Made a few quick clips for your enjoyment. :D

The last clips of the Silo Special I had up was using a JB with an Alnico 8 and a 500k pot. I recently switched back to the stock JB because the other way way too powerful for me and fatigued the ears easily in rehearsal. These new clips are just with the stock JB, which has an A5 magnet.

SoundClick artist: Brenno's Demos - page with MP3 music downloads <- some chords and soloing

SoundClick artist: Brenno's Demos - page with MP3 music downloads <- a simple little chord pattern in Drop C#, in 7/4. I actually backed off the gain on this one slightly so it would be a little clearer for double-tracking.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys! I appreciate the kind words.

I go for a tone that's dark and fat, but still has definition. The JB is usually kind of on the brighter, more intense side of things, but it still captures enough low end for the amp to exploit.

The strings are EB .010-.052 Slinkys, btw. ;)

I've got one in my Sub1, I LOVE THIS PICKUP for low tunings. Sounds amazing with my Recto.

Yeah the JB can really rock low tunings pretty well if you adjust it and the amp right.

I've often thought about getting a Dual Rec as a backup amp, but I'd have to have EL34's with it. I never really could gel with Mesa's using 6L6's. I used to have a Rectoverb with EL34s in it, and it sounded great!

Really cool sounds! \m/

Thanks guys!

Could you go through the details on how it was recorded? Amps, mics, modelers, etc.?

Sounds cool, man. Thanks for posting!

Sure can! Thanks!

My Silhouette Special (.010-.052 Slinkys, as mentioned) is set up with a stock Duncan JB and a single 250K volume pot. I normally play in Eb or Drop C# tuning.

I plugged that guitar directly into a POD 2.0 with a Planet Waves cable, and ran the stereo headphone output of the POD into the stereo line input on my iMac. I was using the Brit Hi Gain amp model with the boost on, and the Marshall 4x12 Greenback cab emulation. The gain was on about 6 for the first clip and 5 for the second. I bypassed the effects so all I got from the POD was the basic tone.

I balanced out my levels so it wouldn't be clipping and then just recorded it straight onto the Mac with Garageband '09 (v. 5.1). I added a little dash of reverb and a tiny bit of compression on both tracks just to smooth things over, and also put a little delay on the second one. No EQ or anything like that, though.

Exported as an MP3 to iTunes and posted on Soundclick. Voila!

Sounds nice and FAT...just the way I like it myself hehe. I guess the JB is perfectly balanced with the 250K pot instead of the 500K. I have a similar FAT tone from the DiMarzio Air Zone w/ 500K pots. I love that pickup. Never loses clarity, and sounds phenomenal in Eb tuning. Can play METAL all day long hehe :D.

hey mate great tone did you change pots at all from the 250kS ???

Nope! The 250k pot I'm currently using is the same one that came in the guitar, originally.

Thanks! Yeah, I agree that the JB tends to sound the best with a 250k pot. Otherwise the treble and the high mids just rip your head off.

Good to know about the Air Zone... I'm currently building up a secondary pickguard with DiMarzios and I've got the guard on order from chandler and have a Air Norton and an Air Zone waiting for it! :D

It took an afternoon of tweaking and really knowing the functions to get it to sound that way but it works! The tone is kind of one-dimensional when you really get down to it but it's fun to play with and make demos with. Kind of like a hamburger as opposed to the steak that is a real tube amp. But hey, a burger here and there ain't bad. ;) Glad you like it.

Whoa, that sounds FATTY McFATFAT!!!

That was some great tone!

HAH. Fatty McFatFat... i love it. Thanks!
