I know several of our forum members, including myself, buy things from eBay and may have PayPal accounts. After my trip I had two emails that looked just like a PayPal email wanting me to update my account, I checked with PayPal and the emails were a fraud!

Just a heads up.

Worst part of all that is they may have keystroke loggers in the mail that when you click the link it takes you to your legitimate pay pal account. Don't sign in with the email running. Especially if you are using IE.

IMHO

I've probably gotten 5 or 6 total of those over the past few years, and I always do as Steve said and forward them to [email protected].

If you view the source of the message, you can usually see that the link that says paypal.com in reality points somewhere else.

Learning how to view headers and follow the routing info contained therein is a good way to determine if the email is truly from who it says it's from.

I see them all the time - PayPal, eBay, Banks - request to update account information.

Always ignored them myself, but definitely good information to share re: these scams.

BTW - be sure to also tell your wives NEVER to respond to such requests for information. :p

I've suddenly received a whole bunch of those e-mails. Funny thing is that I've never gotten them before recently when I was selling a whole bunch of stuff. I tried to reply to one because I thought it was real. Fortunately, the link didn't work right and I wasn't able to do anything. Good karma I guess, or maybe just dumb luck.

I have gotten some and clicked the link. I did it because a good part of my job is to see what happens. The one I clicked took me to my pay pal account.

Had I been using IE on a Windows machine I would have given access to someone in France to my pay pal account.

I sent it on to spoof@paypal They emailed me back that it was a spoof. Imagine that.

Anyway I sent it on to the FBI branch office in Nebraska. Who knows where it will go but all the IP info they need is there.

The worst thing is some of those IP numbers are machines that are just compromised and the poor soul sitting in front of them has no idea his machine is doing what it is.

my 24cents worth

I won' t diss windoze at it makes me a good chunk of change. I will say there are so many machines out there, well let me just say if you are any good at securing or repairing the damages from this stuff you could buy all the basses you want.

That is if you aren't working for a K-12 system.

Funny you mention this. I received a phishing email for regions bank and sent it to their phishing@regions email address. Ever since then I get an email from about every two weeks or so thanking me for forwarding them the phishing attempt.

I too am glad that I use Mac instead of PC at home. All those keyloggers and spyware programs and such have so far been made for PC only.

On a related topic, I find the Urban Legends Snopes Website a great reference for debunking any of the e-mail spam stories. You know, the ones that sound plausible and ask that you forward them to everyone you know.

9 outta 10 - it aint true. :)

Never forget the Mac and even Unix machines can send a clear text password. That has cause many dollars grief to networks and users as well.

Best to take care of some things on the phone.

Account problems anywhere are usually not taken care of by email alone.

I personally never click on a link in an email anymore. Most banks/credit cards specifically state in emails that they'll never ask for personal information. Paypal has gone farther and says in their emails "don't click any links in this email, open a web browser and type https://www.paypal.com".

I won't do any online business with any company that isn't using SSL from their login screen forward. (Yes, I know 3DES is backwards compatible with DES in that it has encrypt->decrypt->encrypt and can use the same key for both encrypt stages if working in compatibility mode. Hopefully AES will becomes more prevalent soon. The fact it wasn't developed by the NSA is in its favor.)

Haven't really seen or been around enough of them to have an opinion on them yet.

They should however do what Apple says they will do.

My desktop purchase would be the iMac G5 flat panel.

all IMHO
