Weak Moment - New Ax(is)/Dealer Scorecard

I've been traveling for work the past few days and have made the most of it by visiting music shops along the way.

First stop was at Midtown Music in Atlanta. They had lots of nice guitars, (no EBMM) and maybe 4 Stingrays. Tons of amps and cool gadgets. I spent maybe 30 or 45 minutes there without so much as a hello, can I help you, etc. Store was not busy w/ 2 employees "working." Score D-

In Birmingham, I stopped at Bailey Brothers. This is a really big store. They had a lot more stuff, though not as much high end as Midtown. They probably had 8 to 10 people working there but were not very busy. They had 5 or 6 EBMM basses but no guitars. One employee offered to help me while I was browsing in the PA section though the guitar room was unmanned. Slightly better than the first store. Score C

Last, on my way back through Atlanta, I stopped at Atlanta Music Brokers. Decent size store with a good mix of high end and regular stuff. Both employees working there greeted me within the first minute when I came in, offered to help, but let me shop at my own pace without any pressure at all. They had 5 or 6 EBMM basses, a couple of Sub guitars and a rosewood Axis in stock. Against my better judgment, I played the Axis for a bit and it followed me home. Score A+

BTW, anybody know anything about the truss rod tools & saddle wrenches?

When I bought my Sterling in Charleston a few weeks ago I didn't get either but I figured that they were just misplaced or something. I didn't notice it until I got home.

Yesterday, I checked out the case and noticed that neither was included. The store mgr and I checked every EBMM case they had but none included these.

I did get two tremolo springs in my case for my hardtail though.

I don't believe the MM's come with tools as part of the case candy. I know I've never received them, and I think there was an explanation at one time in an old thread.

The truss rod is adjustable at the base of the neck with any solid shafted tool that will fit in the wheel holes. (i.e. small philips screwdriver, allen key shaft etc.) the saddle adjustments are also allens. I don't recall what size, I just use the one that fits, but someone else may be able to provide the actual size needed from memory.

EBMM, stopped providing them a while ago. You get them sometime if you buy NOS instruments.

As for the screw driver, I can't remember the size off the top of my head, but it wasn't very big. My buddy OC recommended to me that I grind the head off and it was a great move. If you don't have a grinder, take it with to Sears and ask them for a demo, like your going to buy one. Or try to find someone that you know that has one. It takes like 5 minutes to do.

Well, knowing that it was a conscious decision not to include them helps. I can see where you guys that have several EBMM's would subsequently now have several sets of tools and really only need just the one.

Well, that would explain the poor customer service I got at the first two shops...They might have just been dog people.

A shop by me has one and i've got to say the pictures, like most guitar pictures don't do the instrument justice. In person the thing looks amazing!!!

Ugh, That Axis is BEAUTIFUL! I LOVE the wood grain on those.

I've got to stop by that Atlanta Music Brokers next time I'm up in ATL looking for guitars. I just put a down payment on a JP7 so I probably won't be in the market for a while, though. /

Edit: well, turns out the 'rents are fronting a tiny bit of cash and I'm just going to buy the JP7 outright tomorrow. x999

Bummed Out

I decided to change the strings tonight as the ones that were on it were getting a little worn. I took the old ones off, put a little linseed oil on the fretboard, and started putting some reg slinky's on. On the 2nd one, the A, I noticed that the locking screw on the back didn't seem to be getting any tighter. Turns out it was stripped.

Well, this was at 7:45 my time, but I figured that since it was only 4:45 in CA it would be worth a try to get customer service. I got a real person on the phone, (I didn't catch her name), who was very helpful and said that she would get a replacement tuner out to me on Monday.

So, I am bummed that I got a bad part, but I can't say enough about the great service!
