hi guys
i just bought a wonderful JP6. the simple version, no piezo.
it's an amazing guitar and a dream to play.
i noticed something strange though..de back of the neck goes a little bit 'in' round the fourth fret, like there's too much wood sanded away. it's only at the top-side (behind the E, A and D string). it almost feels deliberate, but i can't think of a reason why...it doesn't hinder playing, it just feels ..Weird.
has anyone else the same issue with his guitar? i read they're not machine made, so maybe a human 'error'?
thanks!
Pat

Hi Pat!

Without seeing the actual guitar this is always difficult to say. If your guitar is new and under warranty, the first ting to do is bring the guitar back to the store and have them look at it. It could be purely cosmetic, it could be an optical illusion, it could be something that needs fixing. if there is a problem, they store should deal with it. Otherwise contact the EBMM Belgian distributor or EBMM International Customer Service directly.

BTW, we have a forum rule : no photos = no guitar. :)

i better get some pics up then :)

ok, here's an attempt for a photo. look at the 3th fret, that's where the neck gets a bit more shallow. it's subtle to the eye, but in your hands it's very obvious.
i had a gig yesterday and the other guys in the band could both see and feel it. emotions were mixed from 'return it' to 'I wouldn't worry about it'... confusing..

I think I see it...?

I would definitively decide if it bothes you or not.... And if the answer is yes, then follow DrKev's advice to the letter, and you will be taken care of.

that's how subtle is it :)
just found out that once the neck gets thinner, it stays thinner right up to the nut.

i will take it to the shop and see what they say, but i'm sure they will say it's nothing and within the 'normal QC tolerance levels', the easiest for all...

i may just keep the guitar as it is and consider it a custom shop request.
my only concern is that it was maybe level when they made it, but the wood was not totally dry and has dried later and thus shrunk... what will it do in the future then?

i have another gig tonight, i'll try not to focus on it :)

thanks for your thoughts!

The standard profile on JPs (JP Standard/BFR/X) has a cool neck shape where the side with the low strings is slightly thicker than the side with the higher strings. I don't think it's wood expanding/shrinking in this case because if it was you'd notice something more severe like the fretboard being affected or neck warping in that case. I'm sure it's nothing serious as well, but just in case contact EBMM directly instead of the shop and they'll take care of you. The dudes at EBMM are fantastic and always are eager to help out :)

That's definitely not right, its quite obvious to the eye. The neck should have a straight but tapering slightly profile to the nut, there should not be a change in profile part way up the neck. For sure contact customer service, this neck may need replacing.

The guitar is back in the store, waiting for the distributor to have a look at it.

could end up waiting weeks for the same guitar to come back with a note 'we don't think this is a real problem'...
and that is the real issue, I have to rely on the goodwill of the distributor. and this just means more work for them.

to be continued...

Kudos to the Dutch distributor (Voerman)! the guy drove to Belgium with a brand-new guitar.
Acknowledged there was something wrong, asked me to inspect the new guitar, all was fine and the first one goes back to the states.
the new one doesn't have the matching headstock, but that i don't mind. very pleased with the service!

Congrats on getting this worked out and on your new guitar. Its always nice to hear happy endings like this. The pics of your guitars neck profile didn't look right, but way to hard to tell from a picture. If it didn't feel right, that speaks volumes. Glad you got it settled.. now go jam ;)

Welcome Pat! Very glad that it all worked out for you. VERY nice guitar! Congrats and welcome to the family! Some really cool people here. And, occasionally the main man (BP) drops by to contribute as well.
