Hi Everyone!,
I was accompaning my wife on a buisness trip the other day, and while she was at her meeting I was at the Guitar Center! I actually wasn't planning on buying ANYTHING but of course I went to the bass section. And behold...Excalibur! An all black brand new Ernie Ball Sterling...on clearance...for $819 with a EB hardshell case! Well after almost wetting myself.I played it and played it.What a bass! To make a long story short it came home with me. I only have one question.Do the original strap buttons accept any straplocks or must I install straplocks seperately?

I had to install strap locks on my stingray, that took me a good 20mins cause the screws that were in there origionally were hard as hell to get out lol, fine craftsmenship, Im assuming you would have to do the same for your sterling.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum, too, and have an almost identical story. I was in Guitar Center, Tonawanda, NY, last week and purchased a Fender American Precision, for $600. They put a huge selection of basses and guitars that have been in stock for a while on sale for "at cost" or close to it. I was in the market for a P bass and I almost bought the exact guitar two weeks prior for $900. It was surely a deal of a lifetime for the $600, brand new. There is not a mark or blemish on the guitar, anywhere.

Well, sitting there when I bought the P bass was a Music Man Sterling fretless, in vintage sunburst & with the Piezo bridge option, for $879. It had been hanging in GC for a few months that I had noticed, and the price was $1400 and change. I went back the next day and bought it for the $879. I was very lucky it was still there.

The serial number puts it to about 2001, so it must have been sitting around for some time. There is a slight paint chip on the back next to the battery compartment, and that is the only blemish on the whole guitar. It is down to the wood, and about 2-3 millimeters in length. I could put a little paint on it, as it is in the dark section, and it won't be noticed. Luckily it is on the back and can’t be seen.

The Sterling plays like an absolute dream, and I have been completely addicted to
it. It is my second fretless, but my first high-quality one, as my other is a Mexican Fender Jazz. The Sterling doesn’t have the lines on the fretboard, and believe it or not, it is easier to play then the Jazz, which has the lines. It has been fantastic playing this thing. I am hooked, let me tell you! I have been wanting a Music Man for a long time, and I started off with a great one.

When I bought the fretless, there was also a MM Stingray for $900, originally $1300 plus. It was still there as of yesterday. It is the blue sunburst, for lack of the correct color name. No case with this one, either.

Great site, here. I am enjoying reading all the old posts.

I would say it is Pacific Blue Burst, going by the Ernie Ball color chart. It is a fretted with maple fretboard. Very pretty bass.

Congrats on your purchase Busterkilrain, Sterlings are great basses, lots of luck.
Oh yeah, and I feel your pain skabassist, I'd kill for a Blue Dawn Stingray, I know they have a few on www.basscentral.com, but theyre a bit pricey.
