I remember the rumours and gossip about the “new bass project” at Ernie Ball. Wondering about what sort of bass it would be – would it finally be the dual-pickup Stingray fantasy come true?

And then a friend of mine showed me photos from NAMM – those outrageous bodies, can-opener headstocks….and yep, we got our dual humbuckers, just not on a Stingray body! At first, I really couldn’t decide. I mean, I liked them, but enough to actually buy one new?

As time went by, I looked at them over and over. The design began to look less outrageous and more like….well, something I had to have. And then more time went by, and then more, and no Bongos on the street.

Well, according to industry insiders, Bass Central will have their first shipment of Bongos this month. I tried to find a local dealer, but the only one who ordered any Bongos is two hours north and he only ordered one or two, and none in the configuration I wanted.

Having bought a number of EBMM basses online, and knowing Bass Central’s good reputation (my honeyburst SR5 came from them a few months back), I finally called them last week and had a long conversation about what was coming in, how quickly I could get what I wanted, how much money it was going to cost, etc etc etc.

I had originally settled on a double humbucker 4 banger in the Egyptian Smoke finish, but that model wasn’t coming until the end of November. I couldn’t possibly wait that long, given how long I’ve already waited, so I asked Gard, “What’s coming first?”

We finally decided that what I needed was a Bongo 5 string in Graphite Pearl – I forget what the pickguard is. (Sure would look good with a tort guard, Derek! Any chance?)

So it looks right now like Bass Central (in Florida) will get it on the 17th and they’ll turn right around and ship it to me (in Texas) so – hopefully, before the end of the month, we’ll have a Bongo amongst us.

BTW, Derek, a friend of mine says you guys should give me some kind of endorsement deal, even though I am not famous. I said you once send me a buttload of stickers, but he says that doesn’t count.

In case you guys haven’t noticed, the Bongos are online at:

Jack,

Congrats--sounds like a nice piece! Graphite pearl is a cool color and next to Sapphire Black, a favorite of mine. Of course you will give all of us a full report when you get it. A-B the SR5 and the Bongo and you will see how different it really is.

I'm checking to see but i suspect we will have all the pickguards available to order for the guys who would like to change the look. As of right now we have 10 different pickguard choices. We may trim that down but should have them ready for purchase soon.

Peter -send an address for some stickers.

Derek, I will of course write up an extensive review for my many fans (ahem) and cohorts here at ErnieLand.

While I'm thinking about it, I wanted to give some more details about buying EBMM basses online or mail order. This is something I would never do with a Fender - too many variables between individual instruments. (Not to single out Fender - many other good manufacturers are the same, but I suspect that more than a few of us play Fenders, too.)

But I have done it time and time again with EB basses, and I have never been disappointed. When I bought my first Stingray5 from Imperial Guitars in NY (I'm in Texas), the salesman and I were talking about color. He was getting quite a few in and wanted to know which one I'd like. I told him to pick the best player and send it to me.

"Pick your color", he said. "There are no Ernie Ball dogs."

I think he was right. Two of the other bassists here in town have also owned quite a few Stingrays and Stingray 5s, and the vast majority were bought sight unseen. All of them have been wonderful basses and completely playable straight from the factory.

Kudos to you guys, Derek. We San Antonio bassists salute you. I think I've had probably five or six Stingray 5s, my friend Chuck has had at least three and Rockin' Ray Duke, who posts here occasionally, currently owns one and may have had more in the past. Every single one has been absolutely fabulous.

Now add to that the seven or eight Stingrays 4s I've had, numerous Stingrays between Chuck and Ray, and I currently own two Sterlings as well.

They walked in the door, ready to rock. What are the odds that so many basses would be damned near perfect right from the factory?

Well, in my experience, with EB, the odds are pretty good.

So for those of you who are reticent to order sight unseen, I don't think you have much to worry about. I'd rather play the bass first, but there are no big dealers here in town, and it's always worked out.

(And yes, I've also had my share of pre-EB basses. Fine instruments, but even though I'm an old wanker, I prefer the modern EB basses - go figure.)

Derek, I'd love to know when you have tort guards available for the Bongos. Would you keep me informed? And um, Bongo Shirts? I'd also love some new stickers....mine were immensely popular with nearly everyone and I ended up giving them away, so now I have none.

One other thing for you MM fans: keep an eye on eBay for the Audiophile 2-12 cabinets. An amazing bargain.

Okay, that's my longest post here, ever, I would think, and I haven't even got a new bass (yet) to write about!

Behold the Bongo!

The phone numnber is on the webpage - they're in FL and are expecting a few Bongos today (17 Oct). Talk to Gard and tell him Jack sent you. Prices are about in line with Stingrays, more or less.

Our importers, Strings and Things, are saying a 3 band Stingray in lefthanded is £1425. Seems a lot saying i paid £895 for mine. They are also saying the Bongo is going for £1125. Is this a similar price to what you are paying over the pond?

I'm not going to go converting pounds to dollars and then wonder about the whole Australian question, but in USD, I'd say about 1100 would be a good deal on a Bongo 4 and maybe 1300 for the fiver would be nice.

Should this shameless and overt naming of prices offend anyone, please feel free to delete this post.

Don't yet have an ETA, although the rumor was that the shop would get it this week (didn't happen). Once they get it, it ships to me same day.

I'm getting antsy!

I still can't find it on any online stores.

I was just about to order a G&L L-2000 last week when i came across this post and now i'm not too sure which one i should go for. It's the looks of this bongo that is making me hold back my order for the G&L. I know they both have the same pickup configuration but how different would they sound? Wouldthe feel of the bongo be more like the sterling or stingray? Why are they using basswood for this bass?

Well, sir, only you know what you really want. I wouldn't dream of trying to suggest that I have any truly useful information.....

If it were me, now, and we can go with that fantasy for a minute, I know what I would do.

I've never been a big fan of G&Ls...had one for a while back in the mid-80s and it was extremely noisy. I know - or I've been told - that this problem was fixed along the way, but I now always think of G&Ls as 'noisy' and I know that's unfair.

I don't like the little nipple on the headstocks, if they still have that.

I just don't find G&Ls to have a lot of...well, personality.

I think the Bongo is, frankly, overloaded with, um, personality. But I also have heard (ahem) that there are people who are not completely sold on the look.

Well, how many Fender-ish basses are there out there? About a kajillion? The Bongo is a definite departure from the P/J look we've become so familiar with.

So there you go. I don't have any real hard info for you, because I've not so much as seen one in real life, much less played one, so I probably can't be trusted.

But if it were me....well, I already ordered one, so there you go.

Good luck, man!

Musician's Friend has the Bongo 4 for $1159.99 and the Bongo 5 for $1349.99. There both available Dec. 5. I'm going to wait until I see them in person before I decide. It's either the Bongo 5 or the SR5 for me. :D
