I remember the rumours and gossip about the “new bass project” at Ernie Ball. Wondering about what sort of bass it would be – would it finally be the dual-pickup Stingray fantasy come true?
And then a friend of mine showed me photos from NAMM – those outrageous bodies, can-opener headstocks….and yep, we got our dual humbuckers, just not on a Stingray body! At first, I really couldn’t decide. I mean, I liked them, but enough to actually buy one new?
As time went by, I looked at them over and over. The design began to look less outrageous and more like….well, something I had to have. And then more time went by, and then more, and no Bongos on the street.
Well, according to industry insiders, Bass Central will have their first shipment of Bongos this month. I tried to find a local dealer, but the only one who ordered any Bongos is two hours north and he only ordered one or two, and none in the configuration I wanted.
Having bought a number of EBMM basses online, and knowing Bass Central’s good reputation (my honeyburst SR5 came from them a few months back), I finally called them last week and had a long conversation about what was coming in, how quickly I could get what I wanted, how much money it was going to cost, etc etc etc.
I had originally settled on a double humbucker 4 banger in the Egyptian Smoke finish, but that model wasn’t coming until the end of November. I couldn’t possibly wait that long, given how long I’ve already waited, so I asked Gard, “What’s coming first?”
We finally decided that what I needed was a Bongo 5 string in Graphite Pearl – I forget what the pickguard is. (Sure would look good with a tort guard, Derek! Any chance?)
So it looks right now like Bass Central (in Florida) will get it on the 17th and they’ll turn right around and ship it to me (in Texas) so – hopefully, before the end of the month, we’ll have a Bongo amongst us.
BTW, Derek, a friend of mine says you guys should give me some kind of endorsement deal, even though I am not famous. I said you once send me a buttload of stickers, but he says that doesn’t count.
In case you guys haven’t noticed, the Bongos are online at:
