So three weeks after getting into this cool funk/R&B band, the band leader decided to shut the thing down!

He just sent me this:

I have some bad news. The expense and work of organizing the band have become too much for me, and I finally decided to pull the plug.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I was having so much fun!

Ah, spit.

In 2002 I moved from San Antonio, TX to Ft. Walton Beach, FL to join a house gig which had been there for almost 20 years with the same bandleader. Band was stable, gig was stable according to the bandleader. Money was great for a 5 night a week gig. My heart told me it was time to go.

Moved my dogs and all my stuff to FL, got a townhouse, set up housekeeping, band sounded great, gig was fun, making the $$.

Three months later the owner sold the club after owning it for almost 50 years due to his son (who was "running" it) using it to buy and sell cocaine.

The band and all the employees are out of a job, the cokehead son still has daddy's money to blow and I'm panicking. Life just isn't fair sometimes.

After moving out of my townhouse and moving into a small bedroom dogs and all at the drummer's house I finally moved back to San Antonio and back to the low paying crummy house gig I had been doing. Life goes on.

So I guess my point is, gigs come and go. Something else will come your way, maybe with the other guys in that band you were with.

Been there & done that. I had a singer shut down a project that was going to be making 5 figures a show. Never could figure that one out.

Just head out & get another project cooking.

I was in a salsa band for two rehearsals, and then then they broke up after being together for 5 years. The leader informed me that my bass playing had nothing to do with the decision, but still it sucks!

You should get with the other guys in the band. Minus this dude. And keep going!

That could backfire...

I've been in bands before where the leader has gone to give a member the bad news that he's out, just for him to chicken out and tell him that we've disbanded.

Sorry to hear that.
It took me one year to find out the line up of the jazz-funk band I'm playin' in ; it's allways hard when your expectations are not satisfied, and going from a disappointment to another can make you want to give up. But don't : once you've found the right band or persons to play with, you forget how hard it has been.

Took me 2 years to find these guys give or take a day or for them to find me..
4 of us are very are tight. we play around each other real well..
I guess I'll find out just how tight the other 2 are tomorrow.
So far based on emails recieved to date one guy is going to be gone..
So if the core 4 stay to geather we would just have to find a singer..into our stuff.
Which can be pretty hard in these parts.
Any ways Friday is tomorrow so I'll let you know how my delema turns out..

Well, this was a second band and the first one is a very stable situation (life-long friends), so I've got people to play with and will forever.

But I've got enough time and energy for an additional project...plus I want to play out more and try some different kinds of music.

I've been perusing various listing sites (Bandmix is one I just found), craigslist, etc. Gotten some response, so we'll see what happens.

One of the advantages of living where I do is there are a lot of people, a lot of opportunity and a lot of variety to the music.
