Ok....all this talk about GK amps got me itching to try one. So, tonight I went to my local Guitar Center (a great place I might add....know alot of peeps who work in there...) to try out the various models. Keep in mind, I have an Ampeg BA-115 practice amp and love it. I use it at band practice and like the sound of it. I was looking at getting an Ampeg SVT for gigging, but, some of you guys praised the GK's as being the real deal.

Well, I grab a stunning Carbon Blue bongo off the wall and plug into a GK 700RB. After some tweaks I let it rip for awhile. I am not the best with bass amps, but, that thing sounded great! Certainly sounded much better than I thought it would!

So, with no knowledge about how to operate this thing, I took it home with a 410 cab.

Currently on IM with Phatduckk to help me with my questions.....heheheheeh.....thanks Phatty!

Well, I guess I am a GK player.....what fun this fat stringed instrument has caused for me....as well as a dent in the wallet...LOL.

The 4 10 I snagged was a used GK 410T. I tried out the others that they had and the used one just sounded better. Plus, I got it so darn cheap, it was almost given to me.....:D

Phatty....I like this addiction.....that is why it is called an addiction! Plus, you were given a year's pass on the use of the line.....;) Thanks again for the help, I got her tweaked in last night and I can't wait to give her a test run at practice this Saturday....

Koogie, did you A/B it against the SVT. I'm wanting a new amp and those are my two picks. I played an SVT through a 6X10 cab yesterday and it was the best sound I've ever made! Any one here have /had both?

Congrats Koogie! I know you will enjoy your GK rig.

As much as I hate to suggest that you spend more money :D the one thing that I added to my rig last week that made a huge difference in my sound was a compressor. I liked it a lot before, now I absolutely love the sound.

This bass playing is just a phase...right?

Don't more players usually go bass---->guitar, than guitar----->bass.

I'll keep that in mind.......which one do you have so I can try it?

kbaim....not a phase....I do both guitar and bass. I write the tunes in my band (nothing ground breaking, but fun none the less) on guitar and bass. I show them to the guitar/singer and play bass. I like chillin' with the bass, let's me concentrate on other things as well. Again, nothing is going to set the world on fire, but, I do it for fun! We are recording, once we are done, I'll shoot you a CD.

i have an SVT CL and just switched to using a GK 1001rb. its all preference. Travis went from the GK to the SVT and now Randy wants to try out the SVT as well.

it all depends on what your ears like.

I think i prefer the GK but im not 100% sure. I think the only issue i have with my GK right now isnt the GK's fault but rather my hit-or-miss setup skills .

Sorry I didn't answer your question.

I did A/B it with the SVT. The local GC here has both companies rigs next to each other on a nice display. I went back and forth. I already knew that the GK was coming home with me, but I HAD to make sure.

In all honesty, both of them are excellent and I would buy either one. I had a time deciding to be honest after playing the SVT. Such a great amp.

Now, I am fairly new to the bass world, but I know what I like in a certain sound for bass. I got that sound basically with both models. I wasn't worried about price as I just wanted something reliable and something that sounded good.

For some reason, the GK just had "IT" for me. I played both with everything at 12 o'clock. I really didn't noodle too much with the eq and what not. That, to me was the difference. The GK was better to my ears. That is not a slight towards Ampeg, just how I heard it.

Next, my buddy who works there, brought out the SVT I was trying and the 700RB. I picked them both up. The GK won out. Very light and it sounded great. I don't want to lug a heavy amp all over the place. SO, it won out the "move it out of the club and into the car" test....LOL.
