I use all EBMM's and I have the Mesa 400+ and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I personally feel it is more versatile than anything Ampeg has in its line, but it's not all together fair to cmopare the two because they have their own flavor.

I use mine my 80's rock cover band, my somewhat country-rock band, and in this odd blues-classic rock vibe group I play with on occasion.

And the bass is always great, I can dial up different tones and retain cut and punch.

I've been using a Mesa D-180 with an additional M-180 power amp for over twenty years and probably will for the next twenty. For me, these things are terrific. I also use an Ampeg SVT-4 (sometimes combined with the M-180) which is very nice as well. If tube is what you like, I don't think you would be disappointed with a Mesa 400+ or maybe an Ampeg Classic.

If I only had the two brands to choose from, I'd go for the 400+.

I own both a Mesa 400+ and an Ampeg SVT CL, they both are amazing amps, they both have Pros and Cons. I play Professionaly in a band called Towncrier (www.myspace.com/towncriermusic) and a bunch of cover bands that play to 300-500 people a weekend. A few of my bassist friends and i have agreed the magic combonation is Stingray 5 + Tube Head + 8x10 Cab. It also helps that i have a lot of people to help me load my gear, but for smaller gigs i use a 4x10

Mesa
Pro: Lighter than SVT, WAY more versatiltiy, 500 Watts, runs at 2 4 8 and 16 ohms
Can run both of its inputs at the same time to create a very thick round sound.
Cons: This is not set it and forget it amp, it has many tone shaping capabilties, which is also a pro.

SVT CL
Pro's: Set everything to 12 and it sounds perfect., 300 watts (less volume to get to ideal drive level)
Cons: weight, only runs at 2 and 4 ohms.

I use the mesa with my touring band, and keep the SVT and a 4x10 at home. While i love the mesa, i dig the simplicty of the SVT CL and it will always have a place here. SR5 + Tubes = Delicious

I think im rambling now...

Given the choice between Ampeg and Mesa, I'd pick... Eden. :D

I do hear good things about Markbass also.

Just my 2¢

Hey Rayzak, that is one damn nice Stingray. If only it didn't have all those frets.

I love Eden stuff!

But in all fairness I had a WT-800 and that is what I traded for the Mesa 400+ that I now I have. Although I loved the Eden it wasn't as versatile as the Mesa, but really great in it's own right, by far the best all out Hi-Fi head I've ever tried.

I'm on the look out for a Metro to fix my jones for Eden.

Just my 2 Cents, but the Mesa 400+ and eden are totally not in the same category. The eden is very hi-fi and the mesa is warm and growly. So it depends on what your looking for.

that's a great rig. I love mine, but wouldn't mind having
one of those around . . . must sound fantastic
Ditto on your IP310;) Thanks for the comliments, fellas.
Ikaru, I like it just the way it is. Fretless thingies scare me:eek:
I also agree with draganr, if you like Ampeg and Mesa, you might do yourself a favor and check out Aguilar and Ashdown too. All great stuff.
Lots of beautiful rigs around here;)

Stingray + Mesa 400+ is a GREAT match!!!

My Stingray has never sounded SO GOOD!!!

The new Mesa powerhouse cabs also helps a lot! :D

I have a mesa PH 4X10, and sound great with the 400+...

My rig is the best I plugged in my SR... and I tried a lot of amps...
