Now living in Dubai there is a shortage of good stuff. I used to put it through a 5150 2x12 in the UK, but now a vox valvetronix (VT60- the one that looks like a vox) was the best I could get over here at the moment. It is actually v good.

Dr. Z Maz 38 Invasion 2X12. Great amp, but I am thinking about selling this one and picking up a Carr Rambler. Has anyone had experience with the Carr amps?
Thanks,
Kevin

Played a Carr Mercury today...pretty nice, though overpriced IMO.

Got an Allen Old Flame last week, which is basically a boutique Super Reverb. Really usable master control, and a control that dials out the tone stack and puts it in tweed territory. Really nice.

My Top Hat is still my #1 though.

They had one of those new Gretsch amps in there too, but I didn't have time to play it...

How do the Powertones compare to the twintones?

I have a Twintone, and I just can't really get anything out of it I like. There seems to be no sustain with the notes.

No sustain?? Maybe you have to check your guitar?!! ;) As far as I know sustain comes mostly from your axe and playing techniques.
I've played all Koch amps and I've never noticed a lack of sustain.
Is it the same with other guitars?
Maybe try some other tubes? My Powertones are both fitted with Svetlana 6550 and JJ ECC83S tubes, this combination sounds much warmer (with less gain!!), more tone.

I've played my JPMM through it, my '95 PRS Custom (which is a tone monster), and other top end guitars that I own through it. It seems like when I play at blazing speeds, the notes just do not string together well at all.

I was originally going to get the 2 12 Powertone, but I ended up getting the twintone instead. I have heard of a lot of people changing out the tubes in these amps. It definitely seems like you've got a good grip on Koch, considering the set-up you have, just didn't know if you have any advice with getting the right sounds out of the amp.

As far as clean, this amp is pretty much as good as it gets. Do you run any effects through it. It looks like you're micing it throuh a PA. Do you have it going through anything else before it hits the monitors?

I just hate the fact that I got this amp and it is pretty much useless to me.

I sometimes do run effects through my setup, when I do that I use a Boss GT-8 (4-cable wiring). But that's only with my coverband. With my other band I only use a Teese RMC3 wah. And always a Peterson Strobostomp and Spectraflex Fatsoflex cables.

Yes, it's mic'ed through a PA. In this case the Powertone combo has a Sennheiser E609 on the front and the 4x12" has a ElectroVoice N/D 478 (=SM57-killer) on front. When I play only through the combo I put a Sennheiser E604 (drummic!!) in the back for some nice low end and the E609 on front. Within weeks I'm gonna buy me a second N/D 478 which will replace the E609.

Well, I recently bought a Peavey Bandit 112. This, together with a Line6 PodXT live and an EBMM Morse gives me a really good sound. On the other hand, the Morse straight into my Marshall Valvestate 8240 sounds even better on the high gain end. They both really go to the bone.

Cheers, Tom.

They are pretty gainy, but something just doesn't seem right with them when playing fast, the notes seem to disappear.
