To me, the sound comes first, then I pick the top/color I like. The Axis has more bite than the SS. In my opinion, the SS sounds like an Axis with the volume on 9. Not as hot, but still the same great pickups.
Agreed, the SS is more versatile, but the Axis just rocks harder.
