I've just built up a new rig for the larger gigs.

BBE BMAX-T pre-amp
dbx 160X compressor
Crown Microtech 601 power amp
SWR Goliath Senior

I used it with the Bongo for the first time at an outdoor festival last night. Excellent. photos soon.

For the smaller English pub gigs I'll still use my Ashdown ABM-500 and twin Mini 4x8 cabs.

About the Alesis compressor/limiter/gate. I love it personally. A lot of guys think that it's not something that belongs in a bass rig, but it's very nice for a few reasons. The compressor/limiter helps your sustain tremendously, holding notes out longer than your bass would normally and it also trims peaks in the notes you play to an equal level with everything else, so you sound more consistent in what you're playing. The gate feature is nice for the in-between song times or when you might have a little buzz in your amp; just turn up the gate till it goes away. I mean, for $99, how can you go wrong?! I would recommend it to anyone.

The Bongo ROCKS the balls off anything else out there (as you can see from the expression on my face!) I'm truely loving life as a bassist right now, thanks to MM!

Yeah, I still come here to Japan. I come here just about every two weeks, stay for 2 weeks, then go back home to Atlanta for 2 weeks. Then the cycle starts all over again. I only stay for 2 weeks at a time so that's what you might be thinking of...

I just realized that the Bongo you've got matches the one I ordered from Bassplyr (Doug), save the white MOTO PG; I got a plain white one! :D Oh, man. I can't wait for that sucka to arrive! Gleeeee. I'll be honest with you guys: From all the different color combos, I think a black Bongo with a plain white/white MOTO pickguard looks the best. :p

If I recall correctly Japan has very strict rules about immigration. I don't think you can just move there and setup house.

Those Bill Fitzmaurice cabs look quite intriguing. They don't look particularly small or light, but it would be cool if you could get massive bass out without tons of power. One or two of those would be great with an Ampeg B25 or V4B head.

I'll let you know. Work starts on the DR250a soon. They're all about 2 ft cubed, IIRC. Also, specing lightweight Neodymium drivers keeps the weight in the 30lb. area. I just got the plans and they are a bit obtuse, though.

Chris,

I think the best way to put is that I'm getting to grips with it. It is quite different to the Ashdown head and a few years back I ran a TE GP12SMX pre with a separate power amp, and it's not like that either.

The Bongo puts out such a huge signal that the BBE gain control can only be set to about 2 or 3. If you wind up the Bongo bass control then it just overloads the tube, so I keep it just up off the centre detent. I've only used this set-up for the one gig and that was out of doors and not a fair test really so it's early days. I played about with it at home and eventually found that the best sound was with all the tone controls in the centre which gives that mid-scoop effect. I must say that the whole set-up has a very punchy really nice clean sound. I haven't really explored the parametric EQ, comp or the BBE processs function yet.

I'm taking it out to a jam tomorrow night with my stock SR5 so that'll be interesting, also there will be some other basses going through it so it'll make a nice test.

edit> It was a TE GP12SMX

Please post something about it - I've been eying it myself. I'm curious to see what you think after you've used it a bit.

Keep us posted.

Cool! I'm sure you'll be drooling over the box when it arrives like I did with mine. I like the color combo too. The white PG contrasts the body nicely. The more pictures I see of people playing it, the more I realize that it's a much smaller bodied bass compared to say a Fender Jazz or P-Bass. Looks weird in that way, but also very cool.....
