What do you look for in a bass?

feel and tone are tied for first place in my criteria

a close second is how it looks.

i feel lucky to have found the Sterling. especially not with the 2 pup models. every once in a while ill play something else and like it for a lil bit but eventually i always turn back to the sterling

I have to admit that price is the first thing that I have to consider. With three kids all in further education the folding stuff isn't available in great quantities. That being said I won't consider a poorly constructed instrument. I'll go without and wait until I can afford something better. That point being reached it's look and feel that take precedence. Applying these principles I currently play a SR4 and a SUB4. Who knows when and what will be next?

Look is top of the list. I prefer light and shade...light finish with Rosewood...dark finish with Maple. But I'm partial to Natural and Maple or perhaps a dark Burst with Rosewood. Figured Maple is a plus. That gets me to the try-it stage.

Does it sound ok accoustically? If not, I wont plug it in.

Neck quality is next. I'm surprised that at least one major rival to Ernie Ball still doesn't have it right. I'm not too concerned about body woods. IMO, it's the neck that makes the instrument.

I prefer simple electronics but if all the above is there, then no probs.

Price is last on the list. If I want it, I want it

Its funny, I always pick up a bass and play it unplugged first, but I almost never pay attention to its acoustic sound. At that point I am just deciding if I like the feel. I won't pick something up that I don't like the look of first of all. For me, sound and feel have to be pretty even. I won't think about a bass more than a second if I don't like the feel, and obviously I won't spend to much time on something that sounds bad.

I would say:
1. Looks
2. Sound, as long as it feels somewhat good
3. Price
