After looking at Mwinemil's Axis I was thinking about the statement he made about guys preferring a Flame Top over a Quilt Top. I love both but if given a choice I would take a wicked quilt over a wicked Flame top, though sometimes on equal par one does look better than the other on some guitars. Also for those that dabble in making guitars doesn't a piece of high grade quilt cost more than a high grain flame top, though I figure not by much.

By the way I was channel surfing and came across the opening to Michael Jacksons Black or White video with Mcauley Caulken and after his Father yells at him, he pulls out a new Red EBMM EVH from a case and the riff starts. How many actually remember that.lol

Both are cool. Each is individual and for that I can appreciate em all on different levels. What gets me going is when there are some nice mineral streaks and irregularites. Love that over the perfectly symetrical.

A really high grade flame can be very flashy but also classy at the same time. I often think a super high grade quilt top looks a little tacky unless its just the right finish and body shape.

I prefer quilt (see my NGD). I have had flame tops before and I like them but the 3dness of quilt just captures my attention. I love how quilt tops look like moving liquid.

I’ve owned both Flame & Quilt tops. None were special ordered so I bought what was available.

I’ve owned insane versions of both but I prefer Quilt tops.

Overall quilt but flame can be just as appealling, but to be honest now days I just go for colors, DD2, Gold Roller etc. I only own one with a top, quilt and thats my Reflex.

What I do like is the combo, not quite flame not quite quilt but in between:)

What about more exotic woods where the natural grain isn't a flashy flame but the coloration is striking? Like Cocobolo or striped ebony or something like that? Like/dislike?

Quilts only here. Narrow flames don't thrill me. A really wide flame is nice, but much prefer quilts.

It seems great consistent flame tops are more prevalent.
Quilt tops are hard to beat. I'm in the quilt camp. Some are downright stunning, others I have passed up for flame tops.

My official stance is that I actually like the opaque finishes over the translucent tops.

but If I had to choose, I'd take a nice flame top over a quilt top. There's just something about a nice tiger stripe top. Quilts to me are hit or miss on their looks, just because of the variability of the wood. Flames seem to look great regardless of pattern or finish.
