What do you think of OLP?

I got a JP OLP a few years back and for the money it was fantastic... the neck was superb on it. I saw some more JP OLPs a while later and the quality was way lower and had very slight differences in hardware etc and even the quality of the hard foam case was lower. Mine had an embroidered logo and was well made but the newer ones were printed logos and seemed cheap.
So maybe the original ones were good - then later they wanted to cut corners???
 
OLP's are fine and very playable

I know this in an older thread, but as an owner of several Olp guitars, we can go back and forth about "cheap/crap/great/bad/good" when the fact is, if you happen to get a guitar that you are happy with, plays well then it really does not matter. As a music educator and guitar teacher/player the past 31 years, my main performance guitar is my 1985 Les Paul Custom (sorry Ernie ball!) I would not trade that guitar for a million dollars (well..maybe a million..ha) because it plays like a dream. I have tried other les Paul customs that were not up to par. So, that said, I have several Olp guitars including the Petrucci, MM1 and coffin. I play the MM1 daily in my lessons and at gigs and also play the Petrucci quite often in performances..ok..the coffin one is for fun. I have no problem playing either the Petrucci or the MM1 in public and they are very comfortable the action is right where I want it, after some tweaking. I also see many a very nice guitar being ruined sound wise by bad use of amps/ amp settings. My olps played through my amps sound great. We get too caught up in how much something costs, or name recognition. Whatever you play, if you are happy with it and it does the job for you, then, that is that! Just like vehicles, some love Fords, some love Chevys....all persnal preference

well its now feb 2011-i/ve had mine for 6 years and it is my #1 guitar-simpl love it ,all stock-boy do those pups rock-anyone know where i can get another one?
 
I gotta tell you guys, I think this guitar is really cool. Sure it's the Epiphone/Squire of the EVH Signature or the EBall-MMAN AXIS, which I own both, but there's something about this cheap little guitar that's really cool. A few things. One, the neck is a lot thinner and skinnier than the Axis, and it almost feels like a Gibson SG. The sound is good if you have a good speaker, and it has a terrific feel. The neck fretboard i really like. It's glossed over like a Squire Strat, and I don't mind that because it's cozy playing on it. Anyhow, I bought one off Ebay and really enjoy the feel of the neck, and actually practice on it more than my Axis (my EVH is in the case most of the time, sleeping). So I have to say YEAH on this... Little Guitar.

There always seems to be some sort of struggle or elitism that co-insides with a less expensive option of ANYTHING.
It's no different with Guitars or Pedals.

The concept behind these options is purely to provide an introduction to a product line that would otherwise be unattainable at that point.
The counter point by many is to just save up for "the real thing"

But for myself as a young budding musician I struggled to find a guitar that fit my hands and my needs. I found an OLP MM1F in tobacco sunburst on eBay for a couple of hundreds of dollars. I was lucky enough to buy it and enjoy it. My playing improved because i was comfortable behind that particular instrument. As my abilities increased i would make some changes here and there with pickups and improved electronics. Overall the base instrument was "good".
Fast forward 6-7 years I'm now out of school and have a fulltime job that is paying handsomely. I wanted a High End guitar that would stay with me forever and pass along to my children someday. My first go to was a P/S guitar and was almost ready to jump into that pond; however, i didn't know if i would like it and it would be comfortable to me. My OLP was a far cry from an EBMM but i knew what it felt like and if the "Real Thing" was better then thats where i need to go. So i did... I'm thankful for that transitional guitar that got me to EBMM. I love the guitars. I play them nearly exclusively and have had many bucketlist items checked off the list because of EBMM.

So are they "BAD" no... they are what they are
Sterling by MusicMan is the next iteration and are far superior to the days of OLP and can't say enough about the guys that run that show.

Honestly I really don't know what the ripping of these guitars is about considering they were $199 plus tax back in the day. Bought my son the MM1 back in 98 ?. When our band played a huge venue at Rocklahoma in 2008 I took it with me.We needed a backup on standby. Didn't have time to switch a snapped string on our strat mid set so we grabbed it. The sound man was totally blown away by the Pickups and tone response between the strat and the MM1. Yes it's an inexpensive guitar but that thing held its own in front of thousands of people. I still buy them up to this day 20,+ years later.Doing some Hot rod and repaints making them my custom projects.:cool:
 
I had an OLP JP back when I was in high school and I loved it to death. It was a great guitar for where I was at that point in my life.

My OLP Petrucci was such a fun guitar. Played it for years now it’s completely beaten up. Well worth the price for the use I made. Was an okay emergency backup for gigs (pre covid...).
 
Looks like I disagree with some of you. The OLP guitars were utter junk. Complete garbage. There are and were better guitars at that low price range.

Sterling by Music Man is so far superior to the OLP stuff, it isn’t even comparable.
