The only pedal that I use at the moment is a Boss Chorus. I used to use compression, some delay, flange, reverb and a bit of distortion from time to time, but I got away from it all. My chorus pedal stays on the entire time. I use a Korg rack mount tunner, and an Ampeg SVT3 pro and Ampeg 410HLF cab. The biggest difference ( besides how my amp is set, and the type of basses I use ) in my tone as compared to other local bassist is the fact that I change my strings before every show to get that crisp growly punch sound. Most bassist around hear change their strings every year or so, and it sounds horrible. And for the record the strings are Hybrid Slinky's. Combine them with my HH ray and you have a tone that will B!%ch Slap Mike Tyson!!!

I think that should be the samples...

MuRFy MuRF: Just some different settings I use on the MuRF.

Funky MuRF: a MuRFed bassline. Excuse my playing.

Funky MuRF 2: every track on that has been MuRFed in some way. The drums have a nice phasing efects, low pass filter on the bassline, and various other things.

All recorded through my stingray into garageband.

Thanks for the samples !!!

Sounds really nice.

Meanwhile I bought for the first time a pedal: a tuner :p.

A Planet Waves Chromatic Tuner to be precise, very happy about it.

Keep your opinions coming ;).

what I use

hey, all. new to the site, but a die hard stingray user. I have a amber stingray five, along with a Passive(!!) Warwick five in nirvana black, along with a Boogie walkabout scout combo. This has proved to be the KILLER tone I've been searching for. Heavy low end, crispy top end and only 51 pounds. this thing has replaced stacks of hartke cabs and G-K heads. except for being so heavy the stingray is the greatest bass I've owned, includin zons, modulus, fender, etc.

I primarily use all SWR..I like the 400w head and 2-goliath 4x10s stacked...on bigger stages I add an addition 2-15s but am considering another stack of two 4x10s for a total of 16-10's..yeah, seems excessive but that's just me.

As far as effects I don't really use them anymore..we are a pretty straight up organic sounding alternative rock band..but I have in the past had good experiences with flangers..and when I was in a funk band I loved using an envelope filter..but you need to have a very precise, hard attack to use it properly or it sounds like poop. Floor tuner of course is essential (we change tunings a few times) but I don't consider that an effect. In addition I have used octavers and choruses in the past with good results, I don't have the use for them in my current band..less muss..less fuss. If I need a fill to "pop" out I simply play with more attack.

For recording I go direct and use a Line 6 POD amplifier modeller. KISS (keep it simple stupid). Well works for me anyhow.

I used to have a monstrosity of a rack with compression/limiters/noise gates/conditioners etc...and then I realized none of that did squat as far as improving my sound. So I sold it all and simplified my setup. I let the guitar players and sound men worry about all that knob turning and tweaking..I like to be "plug and play"..the sound goes from my fingers, to the bass, to the amp(s), to the speakers..seems logical.

Then you should try out a MarkBass rig! I was all SWR for two decades until this year. Then I tried the MarkBass stuff. I sold off all of my SWR amps (LA8; Studio 220; Grand Prix + Stereo 800) and cabs (Henry 8x8; two Goliath 2x10) and completely converted. They're just better sound, more direct, more dynamic more alive.

Thanks, I will look into it. I am in LA so I am sure one of the music stores here carry MarkBass. As a matter of fact in Hollywood by the Guitar Center and Sam Ash there is a store dedicated solely to Mesa Boogie (but my guitar player uses that stuff, not me). I never knew until I moved here that a store would be dedicated to a single brand. And we have the vintage stores as well but I don't even enter those because I know I would want everything but the prices would make me vomit.lol.

Money is a bit tight right now however so I doubt I will be making any major equipment upgrades until something blows out. And as well I am usually put direct live so the amp/cab setups I use are more for stage sound..it is the bass (and my playing of course) that the audience hears for the most part.

That's the way it should be.

Money is an issue, I know, however, you said you're thinking about adding two more SWR cabs, so I wanted to suggest to try MarkBass before doing so. I am now completely happy with a single Standard 104 HF rear ported cab, just always need to find something to put it on top of (hence, I'd like to get another 104 as well ;)). It's all I need, because in smaller venues, more equipment would not be practical and generally too loud, and in large venues, the monitoring is generally so good that you don't need a wall of amps on stage.

BTW, since you're recording now, check out the SansAmp products. They fit my taste a and I love them, especially paired with a StingRay. Others do so as well. But tastes are different.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Will do.

For smaller venues I only bring one 4x10 and my budget special peavy 160w head. Does the trick. My bigger concern of course (as mentioned in another thread) is getting more tonal options from the bass itself...as far as getting the other "tower of 10s" that won't be for a while..just something I want more then need. And yeah...16-10's would look great IMO, as long as I only use them on stages where it actually fits..lol.

I use an Eden WP-100 preamp into a Crown Xti power amp into an Eden 2 X 10 on an amp stand pointed up at me. I love the Eden preamp--I've had it for 12 years now and have never wanted anything different since I bought it. I like to leave the power stage of the whole rig to the people who know power amps--hence the Crown power amp. The 2 x 10 is a bit small. I used to have a stack of 2 Eden 4 X 10s, but I got sick of hauling those bigass cabs around. I set up a subsonic filter in the Crown power amp to keep from blowing up the 2 X 10 drivers, and it seems to work pretty well.
