a guess

I am guessing that the S and the B in "SUB" come from Sterling Ball, one of Ernie's sons who now runs the company. I don't know what his middle name is, but perhaps it starts with a 'U'?

He's certainly the name behind the Sterling bass!

Maybe jongitarz can enlighten us?

Maybe it was named by someone at Microsoft: Sterling, U B*stard... :p

Trivia: EBMM does not use MS software after they were attacked by the Business Software Alliance for allegedly using pirated software. The BSA's main partner/collaborator: Microsoft.

Just like Apple Computer...little trivia for you: Apple Records, the record company of the Beatles, sued Apple Computer for use of the Apple name, and lost the case. In the systems previous to OS X, Apple created an alert sound in the system to pay tribute to the company: Sosumi (promounced "so sue me")

Other than that, I'm talking out of my a**... :D

I had heard that there was a settlement where that the Record company would not
press the charges further if the Computer company stayed out of the music business.
Then the iPod/iTunes came out and it ruffled some feathers.

I've also read an article on that whole M$ thing and Ernie Ball. It sounded like the software police was a little harsh EB as there were only a few computers out of many that had out of date licenses or something. EB had the last laugh as they switched every thing over to Open Source software like Linux and OpenOffice. I thought that
that was great and one more reason to be proud to be an Ernie Ball product owner.

Of course, I'm a software developer and work for company that advocates the using of Open Source software.

Sorry for the geek factor,

Scottie (fellow geek):

I do believe you are right about the settlement per Apple, as well as with the iPod issue. I think it raised the suspicion of Apple Records at first, but they decided not to pursue it after cooler heads prevailed.

Way to go for giving Micro$oft the finger, EBMM! :D

But what about the guitar? Why isn't it SUG? And whats with the 1? Are there more numbers coming?
1. Because SUG would suck as a guitar name, and most people don't know that SUB stands for Sports Utility Bass...
2. Who knows if there'll be more, but this one's the first...

Kudos to your company, Scottie, and to EBMM for telling Bill Gates to go get tossed!

I'm not a developer, I just critique their work and tell 'em to think like the people who use their software (much harder than you'd EVER imagine!), and we work in a nearly 100% Microshaft-based environment. You have no idea how much money my company spends on licensing their whacked out, unstable, and unsafe software, and I SO wish we'd go open source on some basic stuff - I use a lot of it myself, and some of it's pretty darn amazing, i.e.:

  • the aforementioned OpenOffice (an expansive if somewhat quirky Office-like package)
  • the GIMP graphics program (near-Photoshop capability for free)
  • Dia (a useful Visio-like drawing/drafting program)
  • KeyNote (an amazing note organizer I just discovered last week that's turned my life around)
  • Mozilla Thunderbird (a very flexible e-mail client that puts Outlook Express to shame)
  • Mozilla Firefox (the best web browser ever created, bar none)
A lot of this renegade coolware can be downloaded at GNU.org, or Sourceforge.net, if you can get past the geek-speak...I've found some really cool programs in both places that you'd never be able to buy off the shelf. You can do nearly the same stuff with the above programs as the more famous branded ones, and a company can save a bundle just by adopting these alone.

Speaking of Firefox, if you haven't tried it yet, you should check it out - it just went with it's official public release a couple days ago, and they're going for 10 million downloads in the first week (they've already done over a million in one day!) - browse safer, more efficiently, and all for free by clicking this here nifty graphic:
