What got you into the "Stingray" sound

A Jackson Bass.

Seriously! when my buddy told me he figured I could learn (last October) the only bass I had access to was a Jackson. Muffled sound, no sustain, worthless EQ, but I enjoyed playing. I finally made the decision to buy my own and started research. Another friend said "try a Music Man"... so I did, and it was ALL over. The comparison to the Jackson was incredible. The MM purrs, growls and does everything in between. I ordered it. Game over!

All about the design

For me it was all about the design. When I walked in to the music store and saw my first S/R 4, candy apple red, white pickguard, rosewood fretboard, 3+1 headstock I was hooked. I had to have that bass. And when I picked her up and felt that long, smooth neck, oh my. Man do I miss that bass. Thieves should be shot!

I would say that Bass Player magazine was a factor for me. An old issue had Roger Trujillo on the cover playing a blue SR5 with a black pickguard that awed me and then there was the comparison test of 5-strings that gave a favourable review of the SR5. I bought one based on that and a quicky tryout at Long and McQuade's on Bloor. Later, I realized how great the tone was especially in a full-out band/gig setting.

LOL, yeah, "some guy" who then stalked me upon delivery and schooled me on playing it!

Yes, thanks to the "kind fellow" for the help! Bob sure threw me for a loop when he dialed your number then handed the phone over.

Matching headstock? Uh, that's another buck-fitty I can throw towards an amp or an acoustic besides, it matches the lovely maple fretboard nicely

Like three years ago i went to a show and saw a bass player playing a white stingray and thought it looked awesome and it sounded amazing. Then i saw bands on tv with them all the time and im a huge avenged sevenfold fan and i saw there bass player played one so i tried them out. For about a year all i wanted was one and last year i got one and i love it.

The live sound of a Stingray in packed Sydney pubs in the late seventies hooked me. It just took me another 20 years before I could justify the price and buy one.

Stingray's helped make many of the Rock, Pop, and Funk albums of the mid to late 70's great. I finally got one in 1980.

I started paying attention when I became friends with a guy who played a Sabre, back in the late 80's. I was a singer & Les Paul playing guitard back then & hadn't paid alot of attention to basses. Shortly after that, the drummer in my band bought a Sterling & I started playing around with it & loved it. At that point I had no first-hand familiarity with other basses to compare it to - I just loved how it sounded & how percussively I could treat it. Then I got into RHCP & it was all over.

all the punk bands playing with a pick and that trebly bell like ring they got...then once i got a stingray, i found how many sounds i can get out of the thing...i still boost the treble for that bell like ring but i love the fat funky tone too especially when i play that gospel music in some churches...LOVE IT

I wasn't really a gearhead when my friend told me about musicman. We were hanging out watching some music videos and the Rufio video for White lights came on. The bass player was using a SUB when my friend said "check out that musicman, thats the only bass you'll ever need" Few months later I bought one from Sam Ash.
