Define melodic, l've heard metal bands that are melodic.

For cleans, l'll go the Luke, it's an all round versitle guitar.

Hope this helps,

Scott.

I doubt it very much, those Dimarzio Evolutions are desgined for Vai himself, so his amp and most of his effects are modded to his taste.

Vai could get a great sound out of a MM, if you do some research
on his guitars EVO, PIA, FLO all have prototype pickups in them
these were all pickups dimarzio were developing for him to use
as a sig. pickup. Its as much if not more to do with his fingers...

I honestly dont think Vai's tone is that "special".
His phrasing is more recognisable to me, like when you hear a song and you dont know who it is but you kind of recognise certain things being played.
Vai has always sounded like Vai, even with DLR and Whitesnake though, sign of a great player.

Anyway, back to the topic.

Melodic playing comes from within, but if you're after a clean tone then you have to experiment with which model you like the sound of best.

I agree, thats my point its his style(or phrasing) that you
pick up on. You can clearly pick him out of a song of your
familiar with his stuff. He usually sounded very similar what
ever guitar he's played through the years.
