Actually, don't a couple of you folks break it off a la PA? I know norm does...had his JP running dirty through his Johnson Millenium, and piezo to a PA/mixer, etc. Sounded pretty damn good to me! :)

I guess I should watch this thread too, since I'm going to be breaking off a piezo as well. Good call on the thread, yayito. :)

To get the best sounds out of the piezo you need to run it thru a more fullrange amp than your normal amp....especially since youre going to need to eq it differently...have tried it with two non EBMM piezo equipped guitars I used to play with my old band, I'll be the first to tell you that a piezo thru a guitar amp sounds like pure shiite. My suggestions include on the inexpensive side: the fender acoustic amp, a keyboard amp (carvin makes some dece inexpensive ones) or if you can...the pa. good luck dudes....

keep shovelling...err rockin'

I heard a dude playing a piezo throgh once at a club. I asked what he was running through cause it was sounding really good. He said PA. From what I have read and have been told, PA is the way to go.

Somebody has posted the same topic on a JPetrucci forum. (However nobody speaks about the prices :( )
I copy/paste some interesting posts :

"You will generally get the best tone by sending the piezo signal to a full range sound system like a keyboard amp or a good PA. Guitar amps nad speakers aren't very flattering at all on piezo sounds"

"I was once in a music store in Fort Walton Beach, FL, and I had brought my Ibanez RG2027 in there to show my friend Will, and while I was there I had plugged it into an acoustic amp (not sure which brand...might've even been a Crate, and I hate Crates), and the sound was fan-friggin-tastic! It had a "woodier" sound than just running it direct through a board. "

This one is very interesting :) "I've tried the Peizo with quite a few different things.. I was using a EBJPM6.

V-Amp (cant turn off cab sim - Tube Preamp)
V-Amp2 (turn off everything and keep the cab on Tube Preamp)
Pandora PX4 - Plug it in and put it on the Peizo setting
Acoustic Amps
PA

The best sound I've heard comes from the acoustic amps.. they really bring the sound alive and give it that woody crystalline feel. The next would be the PX4 on Peizo or another clean. The PA sounds good but it lacks some of the tone you get with the other options. The V-Amps are good, but they will color the tone and there is only like 1 or 2 settings I found using what I said above that produces a usable peizo sound.

Go plug in to an acoustic amp and really hear what it's capable of, then start comparing it to other tones from other devices. It shouldn't take long until you've reached a conclusion on what you prefer."

"
Question : Does somebody know what kind of amp does J.Petrucci use with its piezo ? For instance, in Live at Budokan ? Is it possible to get a cool acoustic sound with a Mesa Boogie head ?
Answer : From what has been said/told/released...
He uses the LoneStars for all cleans. Now I wouldn't be suprised that he would send them to the PA, but Im pretty sure he just sends it all thru the LoneStars.
And yes, the MB LoneStars sound awesome! Atleast to my ears. Even nicer with a US Strat!

Petrucci uses the PA. I think you quoted me up there on the full range bit...I posted that on there a while back.

I wouldn't trust anyone on the JP forum that doesn't post here on the EBMM Forum or HRI, most of the general posters have zero clue....Koogs can vouch over the battles (truss adjustment....for that I use a mallett....remember that one bro? what an idiot.) I've had on there about doing things properly...the amount of misinofrmation that passes on there is staggering...

In anyevent JP utilizes the PA for his piezo tone....the Lonestars are used only for clean magnetic pickup tones....

almost any artist i can think of uses the PA for the piezos in a live setting.

I use a Mesa Boogie Nomad for both the Piezo and the Magnetic pickups. I've used this amp since 1999 and it is the cleanest all tube amp I've ever owned. I can ultra "sparkley" clean "Jazz Chorus" type sounds (with a Chorus) and just straight out clean easily. I remember reading an interview with JP around '02, where he said he used a Nomad for ther Piezo and clean parts, and his usual (for that time) Mark IIC's for the High gain sound. It stuck in my head because I also use that amp.

For my non-EBMM Acoustic guitars, which have used Piezo's for decades, I use an old rack mounted digital preamp/digital effect unit from ART straight into the PA and it sound killer. I'm eyeballing reaplcing that with a Fishman "Aura", which I may also use for the Piezo.

I think you are fully right. I found it weird that JP could use a Lonestard with its piezo.

I test drove an Axis SS Piezo through a Marshall AD50 Acoustic amp. Just sublime...

If I were going for the piezo I'd buy teh Marshall too. But I'm not so I won't :p

heheheeheh....Yeah, I remember that dude. My god, he was talking about adjusting the neck of a guitar with a mallet! A mallet fellas...he even drew a picture in Windows Paint to show how to do it....free handed....looked like something my 9 year old would do....priceless. Then same dude talked about how a piece of plywood with 6 strings would have great tone if you ran it with EMG 81/85 combo. Wood type did not matter....okay junior....whatever. I refuse to post on the JP forum because of the amount of misinformation that spews over there. I see OC just pulling out his hair on a daily basis with the amount of dumb ideas that are suggested sometimes. I just laugh and stay out of it.

Anywho, I heard, but cannot verify, JP uses the PA. OC says PA and he is usually on the money.

Hi Guys, I've got a question.
If I want a very cheap option to play at home, what about pluging the piezo directly to a Hi-Fi amplifier by using the Micro entry ?

The best option, in my opinion, is an SWR Strawberry Blonde. You get those for about $300 used. ight and portable, quiet enough to play at home, plenty of power for the stage (85W). Also, it has an XLR output, so you can shape yur tone with it and route it to the PA for the mix. In that case, you can use the Strawberry Blonde as your acoustic monitor (unless you already have a good monitor mix).

I had one and I loved it. I recently sold it :( because I'm moving to Europe and I'm trying to minimize my rig.

I posted the bit about the V-Amp,Pandora,Acoustic amp, etc.

And here is an addition to that:

The PA will only give you a good sound if it's a good PA. If you don't have the dollars for a nice PA, then I would now suggest a keyboard amp or acoustic amp. The keyboard amp would probably give the best tone, but the acoustic amp sounds sweet too. Acoustic sims and modelers are nice too, but the tone is nowhere near as good as through a full range sound system.

I use both a guitar with piezo pickups and two others with standard alinico pickups onstage. My piezos don't like my tube amp. I found that solid state amps work better for piezos. I use a Fender Rumble 25, a bass amp, for my piezo pickups. If I am doing my solo act then I go through my PA. Anyway my piezo pickups don't like tube amps.

What is the best choice (cool sound but no too expensive) ?
I use several guitars on stage. I have an LTD L6 thinline that does not like my Hot Rod Deluxe. The HRD loves my electric guitars. I have found that piezo pickups just love solid state amps. I use a Fender Rumble for that guitar, $120. Yes I know it is a bass amp but it is amazing. I can also go in through the PA and the sound is also incredible it just depends on what setup we are using that night.
