So let me start by saying that to ME, delay is the most important effect after having a good distortion and clean tone. To me it just "feels" much better and gives some ambiance and space to everything. Of course the right amount is key in every particular scenario. I don't really use it for stuff like U2, but there are so many possibilities and also lets you be creative. Sometimes I stumble on some cool settings that make me come up with more rhythmical type stuff. And I MUST have the delay on for leads all the time. Without delay on lead it never sounds right to me.

Now there are billions of delays out there, so I'm just curious what people like to use. I personally like the tone of tape delays and analog delays. In general I like darker sounding tones of almost everything. But digital delays are cool for that rhythmic stuff like U2.

The ironic thing is that the only delay I have now is a Boss DD3. This was my first pedal I ever bought when i started playing around 1999.

I've played bunch of them and here are my favorites which I like a lot and would consider: Strymon El Capistan (amazing tape delay simulation digital pedal), Strymon Timeline (can do tons of stuff), MXR Carbon Copy (simple yet great real analog delay), TC Electronic Nova Delay (Nice versatile digital delay with all kinds tones but mostly digital...9 presets).

And finally there is the new TC Electronic Flashback X4!!! This is really the winner to me for ease of use, 3 presets, dedicated looper, 4 slots for the Toneprints. It is just so practical that this is the delay I will be getting. I always liked the original Flashback, but felt there were some limitations which have been addressed with the X4. I also really LOVE the Strymon El Capistan, but feel that I can get a lot more from the TC Flashback X4.

So what do you guys like to use for delays and how do you use them?

My number 1 is the El Capistan. I just love how it enhances my sound without getting in the way when I play. The one piece of gear that I strongly regret selling is my EH Memory Man. It was actually the first delay pedal that I ever bought so I never truly appreciated what it did. Once I sell something, that's usually it for me. The EHMM is the one thing that I may end up buying again.
I use delay for leads and generally kick it off for anything else.

TC Flashback. I also use the factory settings - Tape/LoFi/2280. I loaded a few Toneprints, but I prefer the other ones.

Danelectro PB&J. Yes, it's really small, it's cheap, it's made of plastic, but sounds fantastic! I've had my one for 8 years now?, and I have yet to feel the need to change it. There is nothing out there that is significantly better sounding that warrants me dropping the cash right now.

Though I'll take Spuds old TC off his hands... :)

I've been using a Boss DD20 for years now. It has 4 memories plus a manual "memory" so I can essentially have 5 different delays, which is idea for live gigging.

The thing the DD20 has that many others don't is an illuminated display - I can easily see by lights what memory I am, what the tempo is, and what the delay rate is.

Eventide Timefactor. 50 presets. 9 types of delay, very customizable and lots of options for tweeking.

T-Rex Replica, if its good enough for Gilmour... Also have a MXR Analog Delay on my mini board. Both are great.

I primarily use a TC Electronic Flashback set to 2290 or Tape Delay mode. I also have a EH Memory Boy that I'll stack on the Flashback for Eric Johnson like cleans. Finally, I use a Wampler Faux Tape Echo for one rig, for a more "spacey" feel.

On my main board, I run delay and reverb in parallel with a mixer. I find I get the most of out both pedals that way.

I've been using a DD20 for years, into a VP so I can blend it in. But I just picked up the Flashback X4 to try out (I have the FB on my smaller board). Have to say, I'm still on the fence about keeping it.

I'd love to move to the Timefactor or Timeline, but honestly, I just need 2-3 presets (tape, modulated, etc.) so simple is better. Bonus is an easy to use looper so I can try out ideas in a pinch.

I used the DD3 FOREVER. That was a solid workhorse pedal, and they sounded great. It cannot be beat for the budget.

Afterwards, I used a TC Nova system, and those delays were delightful (based on the Nova Delay) and now I'm back on my 11 Rack.

I did get to fudge for a weekend on a studio's original rackmount TC 2290. But I gotta be honest, the Toneczar Echoczar they had their impressed me the most. Insane delay (insanely expensive too) but the most organic, transparent, and simply mind blowing delay I have ever had the pleasure to noodle with. It is a dream for me to own this pedal!

I gotta admit, I'm trying to be a real man and use less and less delays especially on overdriven/dirt tones. Maybe some slapback but I end up using delays 90% of the time with cleans.

New to my pedal board is the electro harmonix tone tatto which integrates the really great memory toy delay. Very warm sounding, very analog. After using only digital delays I fell in love with it in an instant.
