Greetings all,
I play mainly rock/blues in an original band. We have a large PA, that we all go through. I have a 4 string 3eq, and a 5 string 3eq stingray, and a Dark Ray 5. I am in need of a preamp/di to go directly to the FOH while giving my basses good tone, possible with a clean line going to my stage amp. I do not need one with distortion hence the darkray. I have heard the sansamp di v2 is good but there are so many options....
All your insights will be greatly appreciated. Rock on!🤘

I use a Radial JDI. I have a SansAmp Bass Driver DI and I like it, but only use it for situations when I want some overdrive. I don't like using a DI with a preamp bc it's just 1 more preamp in the mix. Your bass has a preamp. If you use a bass amp, it has a preamp. If the venue has an IEM console, that has a preamp. The FOH console has a preamp.

If you determine that something is lacking in the tone that you're sending to FOH, then get something with a preamp that specifically addresses whatever deficiency that might be, but IME any decent FOH engineer is going to make adjustments on their end anyway.

Yup. Youll never override the sound guy.

Unfortunately in my situation, the sound guy is my guitarist. All the stage sound goes through the pa to the mains. My sound is thin without any depth. After a lot of research, I got a Nux- Melvin Lee Davis pre/di to color my pa mix with an unaffected line to my stage amp. Hopefully this fixes the pfih mix. I also know the all my efforts can be overridden by the sou d guy, but hey we gotta try.....

For me, it's always been the Sansamp Programmable. Super clean or a bit dirty, it does it all, and I can have it dialed in to work well with several different basses. I want my "finished" sound going to the board. If I'm gonna spend the time to EQ my sound, I'd rather that sound go to the board, and they can work with it there. Of course with active EQ, I can always change things on the fly as well.

On the other hand, if the sound guy is good, they will know how to EQ things to make them sound better for the room and their own equipment, so it's a toss up.
