What should I pay for a new Axis?

John, thanks, this is very interesting. A local shop has had a Sterling Axis for over a year, now on sale for $279.00. I'm sorely tempted to buy it. But...

how might it compare to the OLP? About the same, or perhaps a bit better quality control?

An SBMM is by far a more superior line than the OLP was.

I won’t say how I really feel about the OLP because some forum members own them. I bought one years ago and waited for the store to open the next day to return it.

Rather than surprise him with a guitar why not take him out to a guitar store and try out a bunch of guitars, preferably EBMMs.

That could be expensive. I know from personal experience.......I go to stores and play EBMMs......then I buy EBMMs. For some reason, I have to pay money for them.
