So I'm replacing the pickups on my Y2D. They're cool but not for me. The humbuckers won't be a problem - I'm just grabbing some regular Dimarzios - but the stock single coil may pose a problem as it's not constructed like a regular SC, so I'm not sure what I can replace it with in terms of getting it to fit through the pickguard.

Has anyone replaced the middle pickup in their Y2D? What will and won't fit?

Thanks

Agreed ... I haven't really seen anyone replace the single on their Y2D (though lots do on the Morse).

In your shoes, I might email Dimarzio and ask them about the bobbin size/dimensions, and see what they'd recommend as a replacement that will fit.

I think I've seen posts from you about you changing the humbuckers in your Y2D. If I'm correct, did you just leave the stock purple single coil there? It seems like it would stick out like a sore and very purple thumb.

I did contact Dimarzio and they said that because of the custom bobbin/baseplate of this pickup, it is 99% likely that nothing else will fit the guitar without modification. I guess my only option is to have them custom make me a cream one. Because it's a proprietary design, I won't be able to get a different wind to it, which kind of sucks. At least the pickup doesn't sound terrible, but I would have loved to put in something like a Duncan Antiquity.

the single coil is a critical part of the way the guitar sounds when combined w/ the bridge hummer for steve...

The way it sounds for Steve is all well and good, but I am not Steve, nor do I want his tone. I want my tone and these pickups are not helping me get it.

As Gio mentioned, that was Lawdaddy. I've changed them in my Morse many times, but I love the way my Y2D sounds so I've never felt the need. I did make a few small mods though- the tone pot is wired up as a "spin-a-split" for splitting the bridge pickup, and there's a Silent Circuit in there to keep the split bridge and single relatively quiet.

Thanks guys! I sent a PM to Lawdaddy regarding what SC pickups will fit in a Y2D. Hopefully I can fit a regular sized single coil in my guitar, as there's a custom wound Duncan Antiquity for sale that is calling my name something fierce.
