Candid_x, I heard your piece and it was great! You've got tone to the bone and the chops to match. You definitely made a groove on that track.

Thanks, man. About the tone, I was playing a stock SS HSS straight into a Laney LH50 and a 1x12 cab loaded with a Celestion V30, mic with an SM57. I’ve since replaced V30’s and the tone is much more open and less midrange focused now. Used neck p’up on all but the next to last time around, where I kicked in the PAF Pro at the bridge. Gotta love these guitars: one less thing to worry about.

from candid's site.......

Makes me glad for the internet

When I was a young sailor, I bargained with a young prostitute in Puerto Rico. We went to her room and I gave her the payment. She turned and kneeled at a tiny altar there in her room, and looking up to a hanging Jesus, thanked God for my business. Forty three years later, I’m still awed by that.

If the client likes it, then fine... let's move on to the next tune because I definitely don't need to hear it played back ....;)

I’m not a hired gun, per se, but I do occasional work for a local studio. The producer/engineer team there isn’t too interested in what I think of my takes, and that’s cool by me. I can hear the final mix, if I care to.

Richey Havens once told me he never listened to his recordings, or he’d lose confidence. I’m sure he’s not the only great artist who feels that way.

Candid... was really intrigued by your blog page... Wow, you're definitely one interesting guy...

Cracked me up when I heard you soloing over the changes to "Help the Poor"...

Steve, very tasty and musical, imo. I agree that a better amp would do your playing justice. Only thing I'd like to hear is, if the solo developed over the course of it; but as you've said, this is just a small clip from a large take, so perhaps you did develop it over the entire distance of the piece.

As long as we're baring our naked butts, here's a short piece I did not long ago. I know, I know, can we say Pentatonic? But what I wanted to do here was gradually develop on a theme each time around the loop. I played straight though, the only overdub was the rhythm part toward the end – I was just noodling a rhythm and didn’t even know they were recording it. Sometimes little accidents are the funnest parts!

candid_x i love you man, nothing wrong with good ol bluesy playing, i have that same backing track, i use it all the time, its great!!! how good is Robben Ford's solo in that song, UNREAL. Your playing is just fine, using motifs and phrasing it whats its all about. plus TONE! i find that internet shredders hardly ever seem to hold the listeners interest all the way through a technique heavy solo, i wish yours went longer!!! lets hear some more clips mate!!

EDIT- also nice to hear someone do a solo with not huge amounts of distortion, come on you bluesy guys!!!

Thanks for the compliments! but, um, I’ve never heard Robben Ford's solo or Help the Poor before, in fact I only vaguely know who he is. (I don’t get out much :p .) I found the backing track online for free download, and I loved the progression and feel, and also thought the guy did a really nice job of synthing it. Probably a good thing I didn’t hear Ford playing it or I wouldn’t have touched it!

Thanks, Lucid, on the blog and related links. It's a slow labor of love.

Rob, I love you too, man! Now can I borrow that new Y2D? ;)

I believes ya, Rob.

Backtracks, still not like playing with peers though. Here in this cow town, the talent pool is very small. Narrow that down to my niches, and it’s apparently nonexistent. The guys (or gals) I’d love to play with, well, it wouldn’t be politically correct to say it like it is, but they’d be laid back, no opportunism, into smoky blues and motownesque funk. Good luck with that in the middle of the desert!

I understand you teach? Too bad we’re clear ore the orb. I could use a good teacher.

dont even go there!! man i get some shockers sometimes. like the "guy" who came in dressed like Michael Jackson from the Beat It video, with a washburn electric mandolin wanting to play Metallica, whips out his mega distortion pedal and tries to play Master of Puppets with thick heavy distortion on the mandolin.

i shouldve told him on the phone i dont teach people who play washburn

Rob.. this mandolin-metal-Jackson-imitator apparition happened in Melbourne? (sounds like something right out of Los Angeles...)
