Robelinda-----I have ultimate respect for all of you who are able to teach. Its not in my genetic makeup!!!!! I tried mightily for a long time----but I'm just not a teacher and I dont have the patience-----and I've never been one for learning note for note translations of other peoples stuff. I suffer from the same Originalitis that Candidx talked about in another thread. Thats why I never did well in straight cover bands---I can't stand playing the same stuff the same way all the time. However---I have great respect for people who do--its a talent in its own right. I started as a horn player(a total jazzer) so that has infected my guitar playing from the beginning. Learn the head and then wing it!!!!!!!:D :D

Same here. And on a subconscious level, the tone and articulation I strive for still reflects my early horn playing. But now that Rob won't teach me NIN, I don't know if my aspirations will ever be fulfilled. :p

What surprises me most about my playing is how much there is to learn even after all this time of learning - and how difficult it is to get the mistakes in the right order!:D

What surprises me is that I'm really sensitive to all other noise (loud TVs, vacuum cleaner, children screaming etc), but when I get together with the band, I plug in and try to keep it low thinking I'm being really quiet and considerate, and the rest of the band are wincing and shoving cheese in their ears!

Selective deafness maybe?

I have that same thing - feeling guilty that I cant deal with the kids constant noise or the washing machine spinning ( right next to where I'm recording!) Yet the best therapy is to plug it in and turn it up - guitar or bass!!!

I used to throw quarters into the clothes dryer and then meditate in front of it.

But the most annoying noise distraction I’ve known was, playing a folk gig with my bass player, and the ice machine next to the stage would sound like a freakin avalanche every 10 minutes!

For me it's how a good several months or more will pass without any real noticeable improvement or difference in my playing, then all of a sudden it seems as if some things just start sounding better.

And that I hardly ever use distortion nowadays.

My improvising though is suffering bigtime. :(
