Everytime I whip out the Bongo for a new audition, band... thats the response I get.

Man, that thing looks spacey... I've never seen anything like that before.

I rocked the Bongo HH5 last night & it was awesome, they loved it. Fantastic low B. Very versatile, especially using dual channels on my Shuttlemax 9.2. I once brought it out at church & they stopped rehearsal just to take pictures of it!

Anybody else get this response with their Bongo?

Bongo Pics welcome !!

Yep - exactly the same e.g

1) That's very futuristic (elderley Gretch guitar player)
2) That looks very expensive (female audience member)
3) Do you mind if I touch your instrument (female audience member)
4) That's stunning (guitar collector)

I've seen much weirder. Also being a gear whore, I know what a bongo is. I'm not entirely partial to the look, but to each their own. It's the sound that matters anyway.

well, I am the player and like both the looks and the sound.
If they want an excellent bass player (me) then they need to deal with it.
My current band is used to me showing up for rehearsals with a different bass every week. It is my way of making sure all of my babies get some time to shine. For live gigs it is always the Bongo and my Ric 4004cii.

It took me a little while to get used to the look of the Bongo but the sound convinced me.

I have a Mahogony canopener that I use for opening can of whoop@ss. :D

The Bongo totally rocked, I mean it was awesome. Totally versatile (Which I had knocked it for in the past)

Still looking forward to the Reflex though but the reaction the Bongo gets is just hilarious, the Reflex will just be another bass to the crowd. It would be interesting to see what the crowd thinks is more wild, the Bongo or the Big Al

I've never got the "what the heck is that" from anyone regarding the Big Al. (I've owned 4 at various times).
Only ever got compliments.

.....

Uh huh. The design of the Big Al differs quite a bit from classic 'Leo-type'
basses like the MM [and F#ndr, GnL, some Peavies, etc ...] but it fits well
into a pre-existing genre, appearancewise ... so, it's no shocker to most
audiences. The Boingo, OTOH, is ... well ... "OTOH" :)

In my post, I forgot to say, I've only ever had compliments about the Bongo and its sound - I just wish it was tango pearl - I think it would fit perfectly and be even more 'whack you in the face'. I think I've had one negative comment the whole time I've had the bass - it was from a bass player who plays a rival modern sounding brand and didn't count because it was factually inaccurate!

Yeah I've seen a lot more wierd, partciularly in the metal genre - one guy turned up at a jam session with a bass version of a Flying V (by Dean) - it was positively lethal with huge wings sticking out - the Bongo's a work of art in comparison.
