Depends... Do you want a 4 or a 5 string bass? What neck width, etc... For $1000 I'd take a look on the 2ndhand market. You can view the spec sheets of all EBMM instruments on their website www.ernieball.com/mmonline/specs.
Further, the search function of this forum in the upper right corner can provide you of enough information :).
Once you more or less decided, go to your local music shop and try the instruments of your choice. Cliché, but it's true : try before you buy.
Hope you find your dream instrument.

Well, if it were me I'd buy a used Bongo 5.

If it were Phatty, I'd say a used Sterling.

If it were Stanky, I'd say a used SR5.

But you're not me, and you're not Phatty, and you're not Stanky. You need to buy what's right for you.

Sorry for being glib, but that's the straight story. You need to find and try as many different ones as you can and pick the one you like best.

Seriously...all of them are good instruments and you won't go seriously wrong no matter which you choose.

BTW: At that price, you're talking used, or a new SUB if you can find one in stock someplace (they've been discontinued).

Listen my friend. Go to a local music store and try out the StingRay, Sterling, and Bongo. Once you decide what you want.... Go to Welcome To DuBaldo Music Center , or call (860) 649-6205 , ask to speak to Pete or Nick. They will take care of you like you've never been taken care of before.

if it were me, I'd buy 1000 scratch off lotto tickets, then I'd buy a new one of each with my winnings...and some shoes for the shoeless.

I have a very attractive Black Stingray 5 with a matching headstock, black perloid pick gaurd and a not install solid black pick gaurd that is strung with DR Black Beauties I'd sell for $1k. It has never left my house in one years time.

I am coming to grips that the 5 string thing is not happening for me.

All right, thanks guys! My Idea is a StingRay 4, I tried and it just feels right.
Now, everybody speaks of those S.U.B., but I can't find any around. The prices are lower and would be much easier for me, but what is the real difference? Ok the EQ is 2 and not 3 and cheaper materials. What's the real difference when I'm playing?

SUB basses sound REALLY good. They also look very good too.

I called Pete and Nick earlier this month, and now I have a StingRay 4 on the way, call them, they can do the same for you.

SUB models have been discontinued. However, you may still be able to locate some out there which are still brand new in the stores.

if you prefer a wider neck and a stong growl like tone, and enjoy playing slap and pop, then the stingray is for you

if your all of the aove and play a 5er, then get the stingray 5

if you prefer a smaller, jazz style neck, a smaller body with awesome tone, but with some of the growl of the stingray cut out, then go sterling

if you want to blow the panties off women in the audience, go Bongo :D
