I bought this clean black Sport. It left the SLO plant with a red body. Someone before me had it refinished black. It sure fooled me even upon close inspection.
This must be the craziest flame neck I've yet seen - and I'm much more into flame than into birdseye I must admit...
To explain:
I'm in a completely identical situation - see below...
...what I just did was to apply a high-end Avery film similar to classic Gold-Top finishes to the top to hide the original graphics there. It is not that well done and will be redone by a pro in short time.
So this thingie will have a Gold-Top, a fake cream binding and cream replacement pickup covers.
It is completely insane what sounds you get tweaked out of these ones, so I guess I'll never part with this one. Yours was a steal, though I did get mine inexpensively, too (I paid about 4 times what you paid, but I'm in Germany...).
Just have someone add a cool film-top to your guitar - durable, inexpensive and removable ! ! !
I don't know, I couldn't tell. I had no idea it was refinished until I posted a DOB question here on this forum, and was told it left the factory red. It was a flawless job, as far as I could tell. I'm guessing it was stripped. I'm pretty sure it was a poly finish.
...BP and Axilla are onto something. They DO make large sheets of adhesive vinyl in just about every color you can imagine. With some careful measuring and cutting, you could cut a piece that fits perfectly on the Axis. As an example, here's one I did with reflective vinyl to an OLP MM1F:
The vinyl is available on eBay. Get yourself an Xacto knife, and you're all set. Heck, they even make the stuff in a "Mystic Dream" variety...
Great ideas fellas.....I would consider the adhesive topsheet as a temporary fix. Could be a fun project too! Then I'd really have a one off. Though I feel that at some point I will have it professionally refinished.
Dude, if I were you, I would definitely repaint it. You got a hell of a deal, so even if you spend the same amount on a refinish, you would still be getting a great guitar for a smokin' deal. In my opinion, I would do that rather than adding stickers and such. The logo is all over the guitar, so it would still look kind of funky.
There was a guy on the bass forum that repainted his SUB bass in a really cool sparkle. He had it done by someone in LA.
Just because the guitar was for a Breast Cancer charity, no one should think bad if you wanted to cover it up. Likely the event was a long time ago.
Frankly, it's your guitar now so you can do what you want with it. If you do a proper refinish, you're probably going to have to pay at least $400 for it. So now you're up to over $700 invested. Which is still pretty good. It would look great plain white with black binding.
I sort of like the way it looks, now, though. I think it would be a great conversation starter.
I would leave it as it is...you got yourself a UNIQUE!
Although, it's hard to tell from the pictures that you posted, but it looks like some of those graphics are stickers. Are they?
but hey, UNIQUE is the word! Embrace it! Besides, we all know us guitar players want all eyes on us...that guitar ensures that when you play live everyone will be checking you out.
"it looks like some of those graphics are stickers. Are they?"
they are stickers or decals of some sort (noticeable in the pic of the bridge), but they are under the poly. It would have been sweet if they were just decals on the surface, but that would have been like stealing candy from a baby.
seriously though... I was going to say get some sort of adhesive top made for it, it has character the way it is and individuality. Total bargain u got there.
However up to you but a well done vinyl top in white could sort it all out for you if thats what you want. I wouldn't worry about the rear. Noone would ever see it when your playing it.
Change the top every night and people will think you have an amazing guitar collection heh
.... or you could put some stickers on it with women with big knockers... in tribute....
