Hi folks.

I'm using a Sub Sterling, and I play rock/punk. Mostly I play with a pick, but I also play with my fingers on some tunes.

Now, what I'd like to ask you is what strings are the best for my kind of playing? I'm talking both brand and size.

I play the same "styles" as you... only difference is that I generally use a 'Ray, but I have owned a sterling....

Ernie Ball Super Slinkys (the ones in the pink package)... can't beat 'em.

hehe, ok, I'll check for power slinks as well.

But what about the thikness? Is that the "guage"? I think I've tried both 98, 100 and 105, but never managed to do a proper job in finding out what's the best...

gauge preference is very individual.. some prefer it so tight you can go linedancing on it, while others want it easy to bend.. heheh.. try a mark king gauge set some time (030-090). you can bend those gauges off the fretboard ;)

if you do any drop tunings or are bothered by string buzz even if you have it set up at normal height you should try a heavier gauge.

i also see we live in the same town.. hehe.. kom innom butikken ved siden av mydland (borte ved brua) så kan vi jo slå av en prat :) har hybrid slinky på lager ;)

EB Super Slinkies, either nickel roundwound or the stainless steel ones; dig em both

I would be yelled at if I said on here what strings I used, so if you'd like to know, PM me. :D

I use Super Slinkys ( Pink package ) & Hybrid Slinkys ( Orange package )

Best bass strings I've ever used - nothing sounds better than a set of new Slinkys on a Musicman bass!

Yay, another norwegian! Hang around, this place is great! Velkommen!!!:)

My favorite strings are Slinkys in .045-.100. gauges (+ a .130 for the low B).
Combines tone and feel the best in my opinion.
(Also another brand in the same gauges heheh.)

Strings are something very individual. Although I love the Super Slinky Nickel Roundwound (100-45) on my StingRay (and on the Sterlings I owned a couple of years ago), I liked other brands and gauges on different basses (mostly stainless steel Rotos). It all depends on the feel you like (string tension and surface roughness), and the sound you want to acheive.

The EB nickel roundwounds give me a thight yet warm bottom with a nice throaty and defined midrange accompanied by sparkling highs which are not too sharp when turned up on the Eq. I love that sound!

IMO the best thing to do, although rather costly, is to try different brands and gauges. Also compare nickel and stainless steel of the same string type! They can sound and play very different.

However, if you already have tried the EB's, and liked them, stick with them ;-)
