A quilt top is the swirly pattern in the wood. Flame or tiger stripe is te striped pattern. There is a grading system with figured woods and I believe it's from AA thru 10A. 10A being the best. The premium upgrade is an option made available by EB that guarantees the buyer to choose flamed or quilt for a price. The guitars that I've seen without the upgrade are very good. Due to EBMM quality it has forced the competition to improve their own products.
